Fantastic presentations by my former #ucdavis lichenology students Kevin Ball, @cxadlam, and @Al_R_Wallace at the @CALichenS annual meeting tonight. So cool to see how their research has progressed since 2017! #lichenjanuary

The @CALichenS annual meeting and field trip is kicking off at the #UCDavis Quail Ridge Reserve. Stay tuned for our exciting discoveries! Chaparral ecosystems can involve some extreme lichenizing, as @Al_R_Wallace demonstrated last winter. #calichens #lichenjanuary

I only know how to identify two types of lichens: cool ones and very cool ones. Here’s some pics from #yosemite and you can decide if these lichens (and bryophytes) are cool or very cool #lichenJanuary

#lichenJanuary kicking things off with a probable chestnut fence festooned with lichens! Nice to see the new post with the older rails. Close up is young Xanthoria parietina surrounded by Physcia adscendens (and a small bit of P. tenella) with Parmelia sulcata too

Soredia are an effective means of (asexual) reproduction, both main partners wrapped in a dust sized package, spread on wind or bird's feet. Largest here 30 microns diam. (typical for many soredia). Human hair c. 75 microns diam.

It's #lichenJanuary! To celebrate, share your lichen photos from California and beyond all month. #CAlichens
Happy #lichenJanuary! Epiphytic Lichen community from the oak woodlands of Jasper Ridge (near Palo Alto, CA). This region of California was explored for lichens by Albert Herre > 100 years ago- I’m happy to be helping bring lichens back to Stanford’s undergrad curriculum in 2019!

Quail Ridge is where the CA lichen society will be having its annual meeting Jan 26- nice summary of lichens to expect, and we'll surely add to the list. QR is just far enough out of the central valley that some cool cyanolichens and other air-quality-sensitive species occur.
Great to see @cxadlam's paper on lichens of the @ucdavis Quail Ridge Reserve in print! researchgate.net/publication…

One of the coolest things I've learned recently is that lichens facilitate the establishment of some Dudleyas (cool CA succulents) on the south coast of California. One very rare D. species is a lichen obligate!
