Ethiopian Airlines (ET) continues celebrating its 80 years of success.
@flyethiopian
At the Skylight Hotel yesterday, ET hosted a half a day event with an opening speech by the airline’s CEO, Mr. Mesfin Tassew, followed by an excellent deep-dive panel discussion with three senior government officials:
1. HE Ahmed Shide, Minister of Finance.
@MoF_Ethiopia
2. HE Dr. Fitsum Assefa, Minister of Planning and Development.
@MoPD_Ethiopia
3. HE Dr. Eyob Tekalegn, Governor of the National Bank of Ethiopia (the Central Bank).
@NBEthiopia
I had the pleasure of moderating this panel and posed the following questions to the speakers who addressed them in detail:
1. How do you see Ethiopian Airlines’s contribution to the economy?
2. Ethiopian Airlines is 100% government owned but over the last 80 years, under various governments, it has continued to operate autonomously on a commercial basis like other major successful global carriers. How has this contributed to the success of the airline?
3. ET’s leadership succession planning has been very successful. What can other state owned and private companies learn from it?
4. What role does ET play in generating foreign exchange for the country and also reducing FX expenditures?
5. How will the new Bishoftu International Airport (under construction), owned by ET, with a capacity of handling 110 million passengers and cost $12.5 billion, contribute to the growth of African and global aviation?
