It’s ok to ask directly.
There is evidence that shows if you ask someone if they're having suicidal thoughts, it can help protect them. By asking directly, you can empower someone to tell you how they feel, and let them know they are not a burden.

What can I do if someone tells me they’re having suicidal thoughts?
Always take them seriously.
Make time and space for the conversation. Don’t rush through it or allow distractions.
Encourage them to seek professional support, or call the Samaritans (116 123). If you are worried about their immediate safety, call 999.
