If you're wondering what to make of America's unilateral pause of the Joint Board on Defense today -- or just want another perspective -- I have a new piece over on Substack. This move is clearly intended to send a message, but what message? Is the pause even new? Link below.

There was a time when an MP's own party would force them to resign over a comment like this. The context of this photo is well understood. He doesn't get the benefit of the doubt for not knowing his gross insinuation is bullshit.
That’s Epstein’s accomplice…..right? Yeah…… I don’t think I will take parenting advice from him either.

If you ever needed evidence of a vast cultural gulf between Canada and the US, the present moment provides it. I watch their jingoistic videos, and can't understand how they could appeal to anyone. They're in an uncanny valley that forces me to check they're not satire.

I don't even mean this as an explicit criticism. It's similar to when I've travelled in East Africa, or seen Japanese ads. Their ads can be baffling to me, but they're effective in their cultural context and that's fine. I'm just from a very different culture. America is a very different culture.

Photos from the keel laying of Canada's future River-class warship. Big Canadian vibes. But this is also the ship the US should have pivoted to after cancelling the Constellation-class frigate.
Canada marked the formal start of construction of the first River-class destroyer, the future HMCS Fraser, in Halifax, with a keel laying ceremony where a coin is welded to the keel for good fortune. #RCN #CanadianNavy

America: "Hey, Canada, buy our military equipment. It's really good if you integrate with us!" Also America: "Hey, Canada, you are no longer allowed to militarily integrate with us." Hell of a sales strategy.

I refuse to be lectured on terminology by someone from a country that calls raccoons "washing bears". The World Cup is happening in North America, where the English name for the sport is soccer. Kom ikke her og spil Kong Gulerod!
There is no such thing as "passionate soccer fans". Everybody that loves the game calls it by its correct name: Football.

(Also, I'm upset you're making me side with USians on anything in these trying times... but, I'll have to sludge en kamel if that's what it takes to defend Canadian culture)

Canada is acquiring 9 Airbus A330 aircraft for use by the RCAF under the designation CC-330 Husky. Of these, 8 will be converted for use as air-to-air refuelling aircraft, though they will also maintain significant capacity for personnel and cargo transport.
The first Airbus #A330MRTT for Canada🍁 (STTC) continues to make steady progress at our conversion centre in Getafe, Spain. πŸ”œ The next major milestone will be its maiden flight, a key milestone for this tanker aircraft destined to protect Canada’s sovereignty and enhance operations both in NORAD and in NATO.

The Governor General is appointed by the Sovereign on the advice of the Prime Minister. Why is the House of Commons twitter account saying they're appointed directly by the PM? And how has this stayed up for a whole working day?

Correction: We've removed an earlier post that incorrectly described how the Governor General is appointed. The Governor General is appointed by His Majesty the King on the advice of the Prime Minister. We regret the error.

Everyone I've touched base with inside the RCAF is insistent that there have been zero inquiries from the government about the practicalities of having a 140 fighter fleet. Really basic questions like operational concepts, what new infrastructure is needed to house the planes, and how many additional personnel and his would require - which the Government would rely on the RCAF to tell it - have not been asked as far as I can determine. This is according to people within the offices that exist to provide information like this. I'm not prepared to definitively say this means the government won't move ahead with 140 fighter aircraft. But the only other scenarios I can think of that line up with this are: 1. The Government is very early in considering this idea, and isn't close to a decision. 2. The Government is moving ahead extremely recklessly. 3. The Government is considering this on a very long timeline.

Fair. Leaks and submarines are a bad mix. Don't want the blame for that.
I guess it needs to be said, but if I do hear who won the sub competition early, I aint putting it out there. Let someone else take the heat for leaking it.
