Away last week so missed this appearing. How did Bevan quell GP opposition to the NHS in 1948 after giving consultants gold? 1/ Independence. Remaining contractors, not salaried doctors. 2/ Representation. Across all relevant NHS machinery. 3/ Beds. Signifier of status. 👀👇

"Fundamentally, patients and communities are not singular but plural. What and where these are located changes over time, depending on the relational and spatial framework of public engagement within the NHS". Download and read the full paper here: mbmj.co.uk/index.php/mbmj/ar…

Taster of my forthcoming @UHMBTLibrary paper marking the first meeting of the 'newest Healthwatch' (@HWWestFurn) by examining the place of patient and community representation in South Cumbria during it's technocratic height from 1974-82.

My potted history of region in the (English) NHS is now available #openaccess in @spaajournal. Written for #NHS75, it is part of a forthcoming special issue with lots of reflections on continuity, change and crisis since 1948. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/…

And I should add a belated but huge thank you to @annastansbury, whose brilliant paper earlier this year (see below) was the basis for this piece, and who was kind enough to talk me through how she did her UK analysis so that I could extend it to the US x.com/annastansbury/status/1…

How to tackle regional economic inequality in the UK? With @edballs and @DanTurnerSY, some ideas in a new working paper. TLDR: (1) STEM skills, (2) better transport for non-London cities, (3) boosts to public-funded R&D outside the South. 🧵below... hks.harvard.edu/centers/mrcb…

I have read a draft of this book and it is so powerful. Such a testament to @johnpringdns relentless investigations while holding the stories of people who have died with so much respect, dignity and love. This book should fill us all with rage enough to change the system.
Excited to reveal the cover of The Department, my book for @PlutoPress on how DWP's actions led to countless deaths in the post-2010 era. It’s the result of 10 yrs of research. Publication next August. More details Thurs. Thanks to @SteveLeard for his powerful, striking design.

PhDs we’re tough in the pandemic and we had to find plan Bs. In this case analysing secondary data. Great to see not only did this plan contribute to a successful PhD but a useful analysis on the experiences of patients with advanced heart failure @IOELC @BaderRimawi @agadoud
