A senior official within the Isr*eli political establishment has openly called for the systematic abduction and detention of Lebanese women and youth to be used as political leverage against Hezb*llah.
Speaking during a high-level security cabinet meeting, Isr*el’s far-right National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir urged the state to "think outside the box," explicitly proposing that forces occupy territory, k*ll combatants, and detain civilian populations to pressure the resistance group, stating, "that's what hurts them the most."
The proposal highlights the enduring colonial logic of using hostage-taking and the targeting of vulnerable demographics as formal components of state strategy.
The escalating rhetoric coincides with calls from other hardline cabinet ministers, including Minister of Culture and Sports Miki Zohar and Settlement Affairs Minister Orit Strock, who have demanded the total destruction and occupation of Lebanese sovereign territory, including intensive bombing campaigns targeting the capital city of Beirut.
The targeting of Lebanese civilians is part of a broader, institutionalised apparatus. Since the expansion of regional warfare, Isr*eli forces have already abducted an unknown number of Lebanese citizens, folding them into a penal system that currently holds over 1,300 individuals under Isr*el's controversial "unlawful combatant" law.
Originally enacted in 2002 to circumvent international law regarding jurisdiction, this legal architecture allows the state to hold Lebanese, P*lestinian, and Syrian nationals for indefinite, renewable periods without formal indictments or trial, thereby normalising state-sanctioned kidnapping.
