Ben Affleck says you're supposed to live in a village and see about 100 people in your entire lifetime "we weren't made evolutionarily as human beings like we're supposed to be living in a village and see about 100 people in our lifetime" "that's the vast majority of human history...that's how we did it and I still feel like in a way that's how we're socialized...it's why if you feel left out of a group it's very painful" "even social media for example you looking at stuff you know damn why is everybody life is so good...that's also is a basic primal thing"

Underrated, underappreciated
#Junesploitation DAY 13: 90S HORROR DUST DEVIL (1992) Richard Stanley Blurring road movie & slasher while rooted in the Namibian landscape, Stanley's mystical terror acts as a thematic bridge between folk horror & theological/esoteric neighbors The Prophecy & Lord of Illusions.

The Irish playright George Bernard Shaw, photographed 119 years ago, at the age of 51. I have cleaned and enhanced this very striking Autochrome portrait by Alvin Langdon Coburn, taken in colour in 1907 via the Lumiere brother's newly-patented colour glass-plate process.

Subversive takes are so normal now that I don't even find them subversive. I'd far rather see a Robin Hood movie where he really is stealing from the rich and giving to the poor. Grimdark is old now, it's the status quo. Robin Hood being good--that would be subversive.

Hugh Jackman and Jodie Comer’s grim medieval drama strips away the legend of Robin Hood to deliver a brutal, subversive take on the iconic outlaw. Our review of The Death of Robin Hood: bit.ly/4gflfvp

There is SO much magnificent literature out there, in the public domain, ready for a creative adaptation, however loose or faithful
We need A24 prestige adaptations of the forgotten canon of American literature— we do not need another Little Women, we don’t need more adaptations of Wuthering Heights. We need adaptations of Pierre. We need adaptations of The Star Rover. The Golden Bowl. The Marble Faun. Etc

Matt Damon says Taxi Driver would’ve been clicked off on Netflix before it became a classic "The bar for walking out of a movie theater is a lot higher than from just changing the channel" "my friend Terry Kenny told me about the experience of seeing Taxi Driver in New York for the first time, he got up out of his seat... but he couldn't bring himself to leave because he was so invested" "he was standing at the back by the door watching the movie... and there were two other people standing next to him who were doing the same thing" "because the movie was disturbing them so much... which is not a bad thing" "had that been on Netflix or Amazon... somebody's like, oh I'm disturbed, and they turn and change the channel"

The Star Wars Holiday Special should be enjoyed in the same headspace as the works of Vito Acconci and I'm not kidding
If the Star Wars Holiday Special wasn't part of one of the biggest entertainment properties in the world, it would've had a rightful reputation as avant-garde cinema.

Watched the first episode of Spider-Noir with my daughter, which was a nice occasion to teach her what "film noir," "femme fatale," and "blackmail" are Show's not bad for a Marvel-ish type thing. Cage is too old, though! The character should be, like, 40

I wish we could get a new adaptation of Miami Blues. The movie is interesting, but there's a better movie to be made from the same material
Make sure you read the very good book after you watch this very weird (but very enjoyable) adaptation.
