Perhaps the most unexpected feature of the structure is the helix-coil transition at the electromechanical coupling interface. Coincidentally, in the dark ages, before we had any structures of ion channels, such a model for voltage-dependent activation was considered!!

There are other interesting structural changes associated with hyperpolarization-dependent opening and future studies will hopefully shed more light on the role of these structural transitions on channel gating.
