Georgian literature at Oxford, highlighted this week by @eurolitnet! eurolitnetwork.com/georgian-…

This week @eurolitnet is collaborating with Oxford University's Georgian Translation students. The students tutor Lia Chokoshvili are writing about Goderdzi Chokheli’s Human Sadness &Short Stories. We hope this will lead to greater recognition of Georgian literature in English.

The wonderful artist and puppet master Revaz Gabriadze sadly passed away yesterday. His enduring legacy speaks to the singular ability of art to simultaneously explore, sustain, and transcend national culture and experience. So long Rezo! Thanks for everything.

Today is Mother Tongue Day in Georgia! It commemorates the day in 1978 when protesters successfully opposed the Soviet govt's attempt to remove protections for the language. I wrote about the history of the word ენა ena 'tongue, language' here:
Weekly Georgian Etymology: ენა ena 'tongue, language', from Old Georgian ႤႬႠ ena, from Proto-Kartvelian *nena 'tongue'. An early reanalysis of the prehistoric form, the root is probably ultimately a kind of nursery word like 'mama' and 'papa'.

Weekly Georgian Etymology: ბერიკაობა Beriḳaoba, Carnival festival. From ბერიკა beriḳa, carnival mummer, diminutive of Old Georgian ႡႤႰႨ beri old man, monk, goon, from Middle Persian pīr 'old'. A kind of folk theater with men dressed as animals often for satire & social protest.
