A lot of parents and coaches come to me with tons of questions regarding training for youth athletes. "When should my athlete start lifting?" "What exercises are the safest?" "How often should they be training?" The list goes on and on and on. If you want to help a youth athlete unlock their full potential.. it all comes down to knowing the stages of youth athletic development. Depending on their age, a youth athlete is developing different physical and cognitive abilities. And their training should account for these differences! For example- Between the ages of 5 and 9, children are still developing their fundamental movement and gross motor skills, such as running, jumping, and throwing, landing, etc. They're also building their coordination, balance and body awareness. Their training should be developing that. When I work with athletes in this age group, I do circuits that consist of all the above movements - running, jumping, throwing, and more. So we could properly develop those physical skills and get them used to moving more explosively and while building their coordination and balance. And of course.. it is different between the ages of 10-13, 14-18, and so on. But the KEY is understanding where the athlete's at in their development. Because throwing exercises at them blindly..
