While it remains less famous than other contemporary uprisings, the Chicago rebellion served as a critical catalyst for the formation of multiracial and pan-Latino coalitions across the country.
This period coincided with a massive surge in Puerto Rican migration to Chicago during the 1950s and 1960s, which saw the local Puerto Rican population skyrocket from a mere 255 residents in 1950 to over 32,000 by 1960.
