A Chinese research team has achieved a breakthrough in treating Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a severe and rare hereditary disease, with its newly developed RNA editing technology LEAPER, marking the first time a China-developed RNA editing tool has entered clinical trials and the first global use of RNA editing for DMD. The LEAPER system components can precisely locate the erroneous genetic "blueprint" in muscle cells, restore the gene by removing specific sequences, and enable cells to produce functional proteins according to the corrected "blueprint," helping muscles regain vitality. Unlike traditional methods, it does not require delivery of exogenous editing enzymes. In clinical trials, the candidate drug LE051 showed promising results, with all three treated pediatric patients demonstrating significant and sustained improvements in motor function over a one-year follow-up period. The study was published in the journal Cell.

A China-led international research team has discovered the world's deepest and largest collection of whale remains in the Diamantina Zone of the southeastern Indian Ocean—a site they call a "whale necropolis." Exploring a 1,200-kilometer stretch of the zone in 32 dives using China's manned deep-sea submersible Fendouzhe (Striver), the team found five active whale falls and 476 fossil sites at water depths ranging from 4,616 to 7,001 meters, including one site consisting of three beaked whale vertebrae at a depth of 6,789 meters—the deepest active whale-fall ecosystem ever recorded. The density of whale remains reached up to 759.5 individuals per square kilometer. Using strontium isotope dating, they confirmed that the fossils there date back at least 5.3 million years to the Early Pliocene. Published in the journal @Nature, the study extends the known depth record of whale falls from 4,200 meters to nearly 7,000 meters, providing a unique window into the early evolutionary history, paleoecology and population dynamics of ancient whales.

OOCL Wisdom, the world’s first methanol dual‑fuel container vessel that can carry 24,000 TEUs, concluded its 26-day sea trial and returned to Nantong, east China's Jiangsu Province, on Tuesday. Independently designed and built in China, the vessel measures 399.99 meters in length, 61.3 meters in width and 33.2 meters in depth, with a deadweight tonnage of 225,000 tonnes and a maximum capacity of 24,168 TEUs, the largest among ships of its class. When powered by green methanol, it can reduce carbon dioxide emissions by about 150,000 tonnes annually.

More than two years after the introduction of a three-year action plan to boost the development and application of data as a production factor, China has seen the value of data resources further unleashed, with its total volume of active data reaching 1.67 zettabytes in 2025, up 28.46% YoY. The number of enterprise data products and services rose 29.29% YoY last year, while the transaction value of such products and services increased by 39.8% YoY, the National Data Administration (NDA) said Thursday.

The world's largest transparent spherical neutrino detector located in south China's Guangdong Province released its first findings in the journal Nature Wednesday. The Jiangmen Underground Neutrino Observatory (JUNO) completed the high-precision measurement of two key oscillation parameters based on the analysis of valid data collected over 59 days from Aug. 26 to Nov. 2, 2025. The measurement accuracy reduced the associated uncertainties by a factor of 1.6 compared to the combined experimental results in the past decades. The reviewer of Nature commented that these results not only validate the detector performance and analysis methodology, but also establish JUNO as a key player in the emerging precision era of neutrino oscillation physics, with direct implications for tests of the three-flavor paradigm, global oscillation fits, and future determinations of the neutrino mass ordering.

Chinese researchers have identified two new species of non-biting midge in Medog County, southwest China's Xizang Autonomous Region, and have formally named them Tanytarsus sinicus and Cricotopus motuoensis, respectively. The newly identified Cricotopus motuoensis belongs to the rare subgenus Pseudocricotopus within the genus Cricotopus. Prior to this discovery, only seven species in this subgenus had been recorded worldwide. Both published in the international taxonomy journal Zootaxa, the discoveries enrich the records of aquatic insect biodiversity in China, particularly in Medog.

'Aerial herders' take off on Qinghai's plateau pastures At the foot of snow-capped mountains, on the vast grassland, a drone is on a herding mission. In Domkog township, Maqen county, Golog Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, northwest China's Qinghai Province, herdsman Gongpo Tsering began using a drone to herd livestock this year. With an aerial view, he can quickly track the movements of his yak herd. The buzzing sound of the drone also helps drive the yaks down from the mountains. Once dependent on horseback to patrol the pastures, he now relies on technology to guard his livestock, making his work and daily life more efficient and convenient.
