Salespeople hate Salesforce Doctors hate Epic Developers hate JIRA Common theme is that all these systems are made for recording to please higher ups and provide zero benefit to the person recording.

Maybe it's just me but I think selection based ways to incentivize R&D (PLI or this AI startups) is prone to cronyism (maybe that's the goal). I know a startup in this list whose father is in the central govt at a senior position. Maybe they were selected fairly, but I don't know
The Centre hasn’t yet signed formal agreements with at least five of the 12 startups selected under the @OfficialINDIAai mission to be incentivised for building indigenous foundational AI models, though they were chosen 8-12 months ago. m.economictimes.com/tech/art… @ETtech @EconomicTimes

An Indian with deeper analytical approach, responded to my post on babus being responsible for Indian lack of progress in AI. From his list I left #1 and #3 alone coz they are an educational institutes. Although, I must say that for #3 (Zenteiq) with Rs 206 Crore funding, a static website with no information does not instill confidence. My views on Sarvam being a Nandan brokered nepo enterprise are clear from my earlier posts. You can self device on why Tech Mahindra is getting this government funding, as the company is nothing but another body shop. I went through rest of them and I am going to show you how all of them are actually a result of nexus between Babu and outsiders to fleece Indian taxpayers.

Genloop is building an AI application. Why should government fund them?

The most infuriating part from the analysis above is this part on the slide. How many of these 12 projects are Foundational Model? What Indians are getting is same old Amitabh Kant BS of "Make in India". The only problem is that you may fail to "Make in India" and still survive. But if you dont have a SOTA, 1.3B people would be destined to permanent underclass. Forever. I left India long time back and my incentives Arte aligned with US. I also dont have a solution because no one can punish these Babus. But hope someone in India takes as seriously as they were taking braindead efforts like CJP.

So this is happening?
Anthropic curb would push Europe towards China or India. EU needs to decide fast and if the choice is India, then they should work out a Gov to Gov deal. Not doing so will relegate Europe to irrelevance.

Its a good question and here is the answer. US based startup eco system is unparallel in the world. It is unparallel because I can go to LinkedIn and find someone and can have a coffee with him easily while getting guidance. Anyone who started a company in the SF can tell you that. Just for reference, my high schooler son works as a software engineer for a YC funded company. It is that good. India just does not have that. There is neither enough talent density nor such people are approachable. So NRI volunteering their time to help founders back in India should be celebrated. Then comes the question, why they cant go back and build back home. So put yourself in their situation: 1. Your entire family and friend circle is in the US 2. Environmental factors such as air/water 3. You can devote the same effort as you would devote in India with significantly higher odds of success So any rational human would pick an option that maximizes their outcome. At present that favors staying in the US. China changed that and you see a lot of Chinese going back.
NRIs guiding Indian deeptech ecosystem to India based founders is the new form of feudalism. Bro why don't you come back and try building something? Start with watching Swadesh in HD.

Being a Hindu, I also want to draw your attention to Ramayana. When Raven was defeated, Ram send Laxman to Raven to get wisdom. Just imagine, if he can send his younger brother to get wisdom from someone who abducted his wife, why can't you get wisdom from Indian origin folks who may know better?

you were a passenger in a clown car that fell into a gold ditch dude. He at least tried and failed. Just like Sam Altman tried Loopt and failed.
Nobody evades any topic! Who the hell are you anyway to preach to others? Who are you to pass judgement on others? You are an economic refugee of no consequence, a failed entrepreneur! Indian IT competed with the global best, built global service business, works with top fortune 1000, does very mission critical works, innovates, competes , provides huge employment, brought in 235 b $ of revenue, 170b$ net, reduced India’s chronic trade deficit, boosted India’s taxes, helped build a huge consuming middle class. Why should they listen to a failed fellow? Stop preaching. You go build your AI co and show others what you can do. Preaching is cheap, cheap, lazy. Arrogance is passé. Get to work! @RMantri

The claim that it takes billions to make a SOTA is only partially true. Because there is $1B (within reach) and $100B (Whoa). Let's look at Deepseek, which is much closer to Indian spending standards. While their claim to have spent $6M was bogus, SemiAnalytics indicates that they spent $1.3B before breakthrough. The question is whether an Indian startup can raise that amount from India? The answer is again YES. But IAS nexus killed that opportunity by selecting Sarvam. And Sarvam would be a failure. Why? Compare the background (education and work experience) of Sarvam founder and DeepSeek founder. They are a world apart. Deepseek founder is forged in fire. Purpose built to make a SOTA model. India also has professionals who are purpose build to make a SOTA. But they are not in Nandan/Aswini Vaishnav orbit. They are doing what they like with limited resources and watching world move forward with AI they dream to do. Funding of Sarvam is peak babudom and it will impact Indian AI aspiration in mid-term at least.

Agreed about Kant and other babus. But the industrialists drove the govt policy in a self serving direction, so BOTH are culpable. Notice how Pai constantly evades discussing the issues I have raised consistently since the early 2000s - that tech giants must allocate at least 10% to fundamental R&D in tech. Each time he has responded by insulting me personally as a way to evade the topic, and protecting his peers.
Indians are blaming Infy/Murthy/Nandan for a lack of home-grown LLM. But that blame is misplaced. Infy/Murthy/Nandan could never start an AI company. They had money and they could have fund something. But that again, is their money and why should they risk it? The real culprit here is Amitabh Kant and other IAS like him. These are the people, why I left India and started two companies in the US. These are the people, why much of Indian talent left to work for US based companies. And these folks did well. Let's say the government gives me $10B and ask me to set up an AI lab in India. Am I qualified to do it? YES. Will I do it? HELL NO And you would ask why? Some would say that I have a cozy life in the US. Some would say, I have deep connection in the US, including family. All of that is correct but does not pin point the reason why I wont start a company in India. The real reason is Babu. Unlike, many In India who think competing for 1000 seats using some bullshit essay writing contest makes Babu some wizard, I have not come across one, I will hire as an analyst. Under no circumstance, I am gonna report to a babu (Happy report to Dharmendra Pradhan or Smriti Irani though). Also, under no circumstances, I will accept a position where I am unable to fire and put an IAS in jail if they reported to me and indulged in some corruption. Till this babu problem is fixed, no NRI would come to India. If I were the CIA or CCP, trying to ensure that India does not gain AI independence, I would make every effort to protect Babu fiefdom.

Absolutely right. Babus needs to be held responsible and punished if they are caught doing something wrong. This no accountability privilege just because you cleared an exam is unique to India. Judiciary Police and Babus the three shaky legs on which India stands.
