I joined @RepLaLota and our New York and New Jersey colleagues in pressing for answers on reported staffing shortages, long wait times, and claims delays at the World Trade Center Health Program. Our 9/11 first responders and survivors deserve better. We fought to secure funding for the program, and I’ll keep pushing to make sure it delivers the care these heroes and their families were promised.

During Black History Month, we recognize two Ohio trailblazers, the Stokes brothers. Louis Stokes served 30 years as the first Black Congressman from Ohio, and Carl Stokes made history in 1967 as Cleveland’s mayor and the first African American mayor of a major U.S. city. I’m grateful for their leadership and lasting impact on our state.

Thank you @RepMikeLawler for visiting an important part of the social safety net in New York serving Rockland, Westchester and New York City.
On Monday, I met with staff and toured the NY Foundling’s Regional Office in Nanuet. The NY Foundling has a 150-year history of serving residents across New York. The organization provides carefully designed programs, effective and interrelated services, and opportunities for community members to create transformational change in their lives. The Foundling serves 30,000 people each year through a whole-life, whole-person approach. These services include helping children and families navigate through and beyond foster care, supporting families struggling with poverty and conflict, assisting individuals with developmental disabilities, and removing barriers for community members through health and mental health services. In NY-17, the Foundling operates eight homes for people with developmental disabilities. The Nanuet Regional Office serves as the hub for the Foundling’s Rockland, Westchester, and Orange County based services for individuals with developmental disabilities.

130 schools said no. He led the losingest program in college football history to a national championship anyway. Fernando Mendoza was a 2-star recruit from Miami. He tried to walk on at his hometown school. They passed. So did FIU. So did FAU. So did everyone else. At 17, he was sitting in his bedroom, crying over a silent recruiting inbox—after driving to 18 camps with his dad and sending highlights to more than 100 programs. Not one FBS offer. His only option? Yale. No scholarship. No NFL path. Everyone told him to be “realistic.” “Know your place.” “Be grateful.” He didn’t listen. Because Mendoza understood something most people miss: The worst outcome isn’t failing. It’s never getting the chance to try. Two weeks before signing day in 2022, his phone rang. Cal needed a body. One offer. Out of 134 schools. He took it. He arrived as the third-string quarterback. Spent a year on the scout team. Lost his first four starts. Got sacked 41 times behind a broken offensive line. Still got up. Every time. Then Cal brought in a transfer instead of building around him. So Mendoza left the only school that had ever said yes. He transferred to Indiana—the losingest program in college football history. People laughed. “Career suicide.” “Graveyard program.” “Nobody wins there.” One coach told him something different: “I’m going to make you the best Fernando Mendoza possible.” That was enough. Mendoza wasn’t just playing for football. His mother has battled multiple sclerosis for 18 years. Before every snap, he thought of her. “My mother is my why.” Indiana went 16–0. Beat six Top-10 teams. Won their first Big Ten title since 1945. Mendoza threw 41 touchdowns. Won the Heisman—first in school history. First Cuban-American to ever do it. Then came the title game. Miami. Near his hometown. Fourth-and-4. Season on the line. Quarterback draw. The kid 134 schools rejected spun through defenders and dove into the end zone. Game over. Indiana—national champions. The losingest program became the best team in America. All because a 17-year-old refused to believe “no” was the end. Rankings don’t decide your ceiling. Gatekeepers don’t write your ending. Being overlooked isn’t a verdict—it’s a starting point. Sometimes all you need is one shot… and the courage to bet on yourself when nobody else will. Don’t quit. Credit: Barclay Mullins

I was in the grocery store today and the man in front of me… his card kept declining. He had two kids with him and they were slowly putting their items back one by one. He kept whispering, “Daddy’s trying. I’m sorry.” Then the lady behind me tapped him and said, “Put everything back in the cart. All of it. Kids shouldn’t feel their parent’s stress.” She paid the whole bill and walked off like it was nothing—no bragging, no camera, no attention. Just pure humanity. People like that still exist and they deserve every blessing coming their way.

Walking to work, I witnessed World Central Kitchen feeding federal workers in front of the Department of Transportation. Absurd it’s come to this when our government should be OPEN. Pay everyone for their hard work. Feed everyone. Open the government. Country over party.

This isn’t a movie scene. It’s the story of a young couple who went dancing and were taken hostage by brutal terrorists. From screams of terror and pain to shouts of relief and joy. Noa and Avinatan, we have all longed to see you reunited in freedom. We won’t stop until the last one returns. 🎗️

Thank you @SteveWitkoff the right man for the job. You stepped up to serve in government and your sacrifice has saved lives. @POTUS and the American people are lucky to have you on the team.
I wondered if I would ever see this day. It’s deeply gratifying to know that so many families will finally have their loved ones home. Today, twenty families are spared the unbearable pain of not knowing if they will ever see their loved ones again. But even in this moment of relief and happiness, my heart aches for those whose loved ones will not return alive. Bringing their bodies home is a must and an act of dignity and honors their memory forever. I can’t help but feel the presence of my son Andrew at this moment. I am profoundly grateful for the indomitable spirit of President Trump. This day would not have been possible without him.
