“I’m not sure how old I was when I first encountered the word ‘schadenfreude’, certainly old enough to realise words were a delight. The English language doesn’t really have a ready equivalent (epicaricacy doesn’t roll off the tongue so easily)” Wendy White tries to move beyond the malicious glee in Psalm 129 in today’s Daily Devotion.

“Matthew portrays Pilate as an insightful ruler – he can tell that he is being played by the crowd. But the hubris of power means that he decides that if he takes the easy path of washing his hands of the matter, he can get away with it.” Gethin Rhys wonders how the Church too can wash its hands to evade responsibility in today’s Daily Devotion.

ALT Lord, you have taught us
that all our doings without love are nothing worth:
send your Holy Spirit
and pour into our hearts that most excellent gift of love,
the true bond of peace and of all virtues,
without which whoever lives is counted dead before you.
Grant this for your only Son Jesus Christ’s sake,
who is alive and reigns with you,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Pray with us today.
Story-telling God, as you gathered the crowds in Galilee, and stretched the imaginations of the affluent and defeated, enter our world today...

Lord Jesus, you call us
to immerse ourselves
in your way of grace, mercy,
justice and peace.
You send us out into the world
to reveal your kingdom,
drawing people into
the hope you set before us.
May all that we do
and all that we are,
speak to others of your love.

ALT A prayer for the World Cup
God of glory,
as the world gathers
to celebrate the beautiful game,
we pray for a harmonious and joyous World Cup.
Bring safety and security
for players and officials on the pitch,
fans in the stands, and spectators at home.
May we see and celebrate the hand of God
in the creativity of every curving free kick,
silky pass or impossible save.
May we have compassion and perspective
on the miskicks, missed penalties,
and muddled VARs.
Every winning team needs a losing team
– even if you were the better team.
Let the journey to World Cup glory
be not only for the nation that wins.
May we see something more
of the world you want us to be:
a gathering of every nation
and people who share your glory.
Amen.
“The belief that secular power should give one sexual privilege recurs in every generation, including our own, and has floored many leaders – although today as in David’s time, they tend to be found out in due course.” Gethin Rhys considers how ancient stories resonate today in our Daily Devotion.

Lord our God,
Creator, Redeemer, Sustainer;
Father, Son, Holy Spirit,
you invest yourself
and your love in us.
May we then be like you
in giving of who we are
and what we have
to the mission of your gospel,
the revealing of your kingdom,
the bringing of your peace.
Please join us as we pray 🙏
Our Father God,
May your Kingdom come in all those who trust you.
Help us live out the signs of your Kingdom amongst those who do not yet know your love for themselves.
Amen.
