Treasurer Jim Chalmers admitted in 2024 that he had requested advice on potential reforms to negative gearing and the capital gains tax discount.
Although the government denies any formal modelling was commissioned, it has not ruled out changes in the future.
At a recent press conference, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese repeatedly dodged questions about whether negative gearing was off the table.
βYou can ask again. You get the same answer,β he said, avoiding a direct βnoβ when asked if changes were off the table.
Mr Dutton said Laborβs refusal to provide clear answers on its tax agenda proved it could not be trusted.
βI think there is a lot at risk at this election in relation to new taxes that are likely to be imposed by a Labor-Greens government,β he said.

Question... The housing crisis was already a serious problem late 2024 leading into the previous election, so.... Why didn't the Albanese government move to change CGT and neg gearing then and take it to an election instead of saying they wouldn't... If this will fix housing we were forced to suffer a further 12mths for what?

Today is a sad day for Australian democracy because Labor has introduced the biggest tax changes in a generation without a mandate from the Australian people.
That's why @The_Nationals are today demanding the Prime Minister call an election.
This morning we made that call outside the People's House, outside the Parliament. Your Parliament should not impose more taxes on you without your consent.
An early election would give the Australian people a real choice.
A choice between a Labor party that wants to impose the biggest ever tax increase on Australians, or the Liberal and Nationals who will cut taxes, scrap net zero and reduce migration.

Organically post budget there's been a massive online campaign by businesses across Australia welcoming Albanese and Labor to a 47% stake in their businesses for doing absolutely nothing.
Most are seeing massive engagement and comments sections full of contempt for Albanese and Labor, people are awake to the farce that was the budget and the consequences that will follow.
The Luddites are absolutely seething and hating it as well π "it's a bot campaign" "trump is behind this" "this is Pauline's fault" "these cookers have no idea" meanwhile waging campaigns to cancel these businesses in their enclaves.
