"It's too 'in the weeds'" is quitter talk. When I'm on TV, I'm talking about complex stuff like NEPA reform. But instead of wonkish jargon, I'm trying to tell a story people can feel a part of where we are building things in America again, part of a great national project.

When I was a kid from West Valley City, we had a few businesses help my basketball team get to a tournament in Boston. It was an experience I’ll never forget. Today’s #5DollarFriday is to help @For3JT do the same for kids who have very difficult circumstances. Let’s give these young men a chance to live a dream and travel to South Carolina to compete. 🙏 Venmo: @devpayne

On the night of September 11th, Congressional leadership held a press conference on the steps of the Capitol to reassure the nation. After they were done speaking and holding a moment of silence, as everyone is shuffling away, someone started singing. In a few seconds, everyone—Republican and Democrat—joins in together to sing "God Bless America." When @TheFP asked me to write about a Great American for their 250th series, I thought of that moment. And then I wrote about Irving Berlin, the man who loved America enough that this was the song our leaders reached for to express their hope in one of our darkest hours. I hope you'll read it 👇 thefp.com/p/great-americans-…

Addiction has touched nearly every American family. Together, we can help more Americans find recovery and reclaim their lives. Great American Recovery Co-Chair @KathrynBurgum and I want to hear directly from you. Share your ideas, experiences, and recommendations through our public Request for Information. Tell us what’s working, what’s failing, and how the federal government can better support treatment, recovery, and healing. Submit your comments at federalregister.gov.

Always appreciate an opportunity to remind folks that SMI addiction are distinct (tho clearly related) causes of unsheltered homelessness, requiring distinct solutions. And I never fail to learn more from a convo with @slsatel. Thx to @meghan_daum for having us on her podcast!
Thanks to @bstettin and @slsatel for a highly educational livestream conversation today about mandatory treatment for mentally ill and addicted street homeless people and why (spoiler alert) it's not as simple as we'd like to think.

For too long, homelessness has been treated as permanent rather than solvable. No one should be left on the streets. HUD is reforming federal homeless assistance to restore solutions, including treatment, that give people a real path out.

The Community Action team graciously invited me to help kick off their annual “Come to the Table Homeless Experience” this evening, an immersive program designed to help community members better understand the challenges faced by individuals experiencing homelessness. The event brings together service providers, service missionaries, community leaders and members of the public to participate in a realistic simulation of navigating homelessness. Each participant is assigned a profile that reflects circumstances commonly experienced by individuals in our community and then spends the evening accessing services much like someone facing homelessness would. Participants visit local service providers, receive a sack dinner from the Food and Care Coalition, utilize public transportation and navigate various support systems available throughout the community. If you want to improve your situation and get back on your feet, our community has the resources, services and people ready to help you get there. I’m proud of the progress we've made over the past year and grateful for the dedicated efforts of Tom, Kena, Heather, Fred, Ryan, Monte, Margy and so many others who work every day to make a difference. Also a shoutout to my Senator, Senator Balderree! She is always out and about serving, learning and representing!

I’m overwhelmed with vindication being in DC this week with so many who influenced life saving policy reform. Housing first is done. Recovery first is the nation’s policy. 🙌🏼 I didn’t get my policy position from persuasion by others. I learned the truth beneath the trash 💪🏼 that we have a mental health, addiction, and broken relationship crisis. 🙏🏼 @HUDgov @InstituteCicero @DiscoveryCWP @DiscoveryInst1 @SecretaryTurner @weheartseattle
Low barrier do all the drugs you want as policy for housing the homeless is over. Accountability and recovery from addictions are here, and I'm going to help make it happen. @DiscoveryCWP @HUDgov @SteveAdami

This was one of my first initiatives. It took a little longer to launch than expected but we just hit the one year mark and it's going great. Huge credit to our top notch Jail Kitchen staff at the Sheriff's Office. youtu.be/mwrJ18tUtF8?si=uq7H…

Nearly 11 million working-age American men are neither employed nor in school. Are they at greater risk of drug addiction? Yes, @wkepner and @KeithNHumphreys find: after controls, prime-age "NEET" men are 2 and 3 times as likely to suffer from a variety of addictions compared to their in-work or in-school peers. Our team had a wonderful time visiting CAPSA, the WAB warming center, and the Bear River Local Homelessness Council. There is great work being done across the state to serve our most vulnerable neighbors. 🇺🇸

What actually is Broken Windows Theory? the concept is often confused, maligned, and otherwise misappropriated. But as I explained @uaustinorg, Broken Windows is a theory about how communities collapse—and what the cops do to stop them.
