I like to keep up with Australian and international climate science discussions - it looks like Bluesky will be better for this and less, hmm, problematic. So, I'm going to start an account there and probably delete this twitter account soon after, thx

Where are people interested in Australian and global climate science heading to? Is it Blue sky?

Good job @AndrewKingClim - always a valuable comms job to do! here's my attempt from a similar cold snap a couple of years ago 😊theconversation.com/4-ways-t…
It has been particularly cold this week, with a record low temperature recorded in Tasmania. Such records are increasingly rare as average temperatures continue to rise. Read more from @AndrewKingClim (@unimelb). theconversation.com/southern…

a topic I think is very interesting; drawing lessons on messaging from the origins in epidemiology (where some events are as clear and smoking and cancer, others are more like diet studies of eggs, red wine and red meat – and communication should match)

Really worrying reporting from WA (contains a brief comment from me)
From me - Western Australia’s unique eucalypt forests fade to brown as century-old giant jarrahs die in heat and drought. Climate change is drying the region. theguardian.com/environment/…

New paper in @PNASNews led with @cristiproist shows that a weird spatial pattern of temperature change has slowed global-mean warming since 1980. Because the pattern could evolve in the future, observed warming doesn’t help us constrain long-term warming. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pnas.23…

Hobart people - please consider coming to this event to discuss the hot topic of climate tipping points, based around our report from the community: csiro.au/-/media/Environment…

We're back! Our first event leaps into 2024 on Feb 29th (geddit!?). Should we be worried about climate tipping points? Dr Micheal Grose (@ClimateGrose) will tell us about a recent report on Australia's risk 6:30pm 29th February @hobartbrewingco

A symbolic milestone (includes a note about our estimate further back where Aus may be >1.5 even last decade)
From me - Australia’s climate has warmed by 1.5C since 1910, Bureau of Meteorology temperature records show theguardian.com/environment/…

Really impressive and important work led by @AndrewKingClim and Tilo here (that I was fortunate to play a small role in) - understanding changes under stabilisation is important to gauge our challenges even for a best case scenarios in the long term
New preprint online: egusphere.copernicus.org/pre… We use the ACCESS model to explore climate change and variability under net-zero emissions. It's a long read but keen to see what people think. @ClimateExtremes @SciMelb

“Event attribution is/is not ready for a (major?) role in loss and damage (negotiations)” It has been interesting to be a small part of a public conversation about this – and think about article titles – Friday thoughts Our @AndrewKingClim commentary nature.com/articles/s41558-0…

I really think the messages in the two comments are actually not that different, but it is the titles that give a glass half full versus empty view of the same picture. Both note the usefulness of EEA in L&D,

Overall, I hope this is a productive and constructive conversation to have and helps us all refine our thinking, and move towards the important goal of fairly and effectively meeting L&D goals!

To me, a ‘limited’ role could include ‘helping formulate’ but not set the final $$ amount! If we could go again, I would use a more nuanced and less 'glass half empty' title
