This past week it was great spending time with @AldineISD students participating in the @CloseUp_DC program. More than 1 million students from the program come up to Capitol Hill each year to learn the ins and outs of the functions of our government. These students are the future, and TX-18 will be in good hands with them leading the way.

Educational opportunities and civic engagement are critical to the future of South Texas. I had the opportunity to meet with students participating in the Society of Martha Washington (SMW) Scholarship Program during their educational visit to Washington, D.C. through @CloseUp_DC. We talked about the role of Congress, the legislative process, and the importance of participating in our democracy. The students asked thoughtful questions about public policy and shared their perspectives on issues affecting their communities and our country. I also welcomed the groups into the House Appropriations Committee so they could see firsthand where Congress works through funding decisions that impact communities across Texas and the nation. Programs like the SMW Scholarship Program provide students with valuable opportunities to experience government firsthand, learn about our nation’s history, and gain a deeper understanding of public service and civic responsibility. Thank you to the Society of Martha Washington, the Close Up Foundation, and the students for taking the time to visit Capitol Hill. I appreciate the conversation and wish them continued success.

The Declaration of Independence turns 250 this year. What better way to mark the occasion than by reflecting on the question: What kind of citizen am I?

I have been a part of the @CloseUp_DC Foundation since 1972 when I went as a high school student, then worked for them, and continued going there to work with students at many Inaugural programs. I found my schedule from 1972. My first day on Capitol Hill! Wash DC
