This is a tough one.
At larger schools where most players are basketball-first athletes, I think itโs often a culture issue.
At smaller schools, where athletes play multiple sports and those sports also have summer commitments, itโs not always fair to label it as โbad culture.โ
Athletic departments should probably be tracking overall athlete participation. Are kids showing up to something?
If athletes arenโt showing up to anything, thatโs an overall athletics culture issue or the AD might see there may be a cultural issue with a given sport.
If players are willingly missing for the beach, hanging out, or doing something else instead of competing or training, thatโs a different story and culture certainky could be the issue. Family vacations and unavoidable conflicts are one thing. Choosing not to participate at all is another.
