A beautiful wake this evening for Coach Gratts. A full chapel of black, brown, white, all ages, and all walks of life to celebrate a great coach and a better man. May we all strive to have a similar turnout when our time comes.

BCE = Blaming. Complaining. Excusing. It kills teams faster than any opponent. Be accountable. Be responsible. Be the cure, not the disease.

When coaches tell me they want to be an AD the first question I typically ask them is, "have you ever had to fire a friend?"

Leadership is easy. Until… You have to hold someone accountable. You’re criticized for doing the right thing. You face a tough decision with no easy answer. You take the blame for a mistake you didn’t make. You lead people who don’t want to be led. You’re expected to stay calm in chaos. You sacrifice for the good of the team. Leadership isn’t about a title. It’s about showing up when it’s hard. That’s when real leaders stand out. Choose to lead.

Cannot let today go by without wishing Pick a heavenly birthday. I didn't know it at the time but his a** chewings & his expectations for excellence helped me prepare for my career more than any human ever. Shall we see the galloping horseman tonight? @AggieFootball

10 Inconvenient Truths of Coaching 1. Not every kid wants to be great. 2. You will often be misunderstood. 3. Some parents care more about playing time than team success. 4. Your best players aren’t always your best leaders. 5. No system works without buy-in. 6. Success brings criticism, too. 7. Culture isn’t built in a week, it’s built daily. 8. You can’t coach every player the same way. 9. Wins don’t always reflect your impact. 10. The job takes more from you than it gives… until years later. Still worth every second. Still a great profession.

Very good thread and spot-on. Every head coach and aspiring head coach should follow this advice. Even if you have a winning record, if you or your program is "unmanageable" it will cost you your job, Great coaches keep issues off the AD's desk. Great AD's keep issues off the superintendent's desk. Great superintendents keep issues off of the Board of Trustees desks.

The fastest way to lose a head coaching job? It's not losing games alone. It's something few coaches understand. 🧵THREAD

Ever notice how the loudest critic is never in the huddle? They’re in the stands. Or behind a screen. Or in the hallway after the game. They don’t hear the teaching. They don’t see the work. Trust is built in the huddle. Focus on the voices that are there.

The truth about your excuses: Your excuses are perfectly valid. You are too busy. You don't have enough money. You weren't given the opportunities. It's all true. And it's all irrelevant. Someone busier than you is doing it. Someone broker than you is building it. Someone with less opportunity is achieving it. Your excuses are real. They're just not unique. Everyone has them. Winners ignore them.

Just imagine where you would be if you set yourself free from the burden of using excuses.

It’s easy to be the assistant coach, the backup QB, etc and say what you would do if you were in the top spot. It’s difficult to be the person in charge. Be careful what you say when you are on your way up, as you may think differently if you get that chance.
