At High Point, Flynn Clayman runs his staff differently.
Instead of assistants doing a little bit of everything, he assigns coordinators:
One owns offense.
One owns defense.
One owns special teams.
Not traditional. But intentional.
Because when everyone is responsible for everything… no one truly grows.
Clayman learned this from his mentors. When he was trusted to run the offense, it accelerated his development. So now, he does the same for his staff.
Yes, you give up some control.
But you gain clarity, ownership, and better coaching.
Assistants aren’t just helping anymore.
They’re leading.
And when coaches grow, the team grows.
Build a staff where people can specialize, own their role, and thrive, not just survive.

The best coaches don’t just study the game. They study other ways to see the game.
That’s what Joe Mazzulla did this summer.
Instead of staying comfortable, he went to France, not for vacation, but to learn.
He spent time with Le Mans head coach Guillaume Vizade to exchange ideas about basketball philosophy spacing, ball movement, and how to teach offense.
And months later… it showed up.
Not as a copied system.
But as a refined one.
More flow.
More movement.
More intentionality.
Here’s what most people miss:
Growth doesn’t come from doing more of the same.
It comes from seeing the same thing differently.
Mazzulla didn’t go to France to find answers.
He went to ask better questions.
The best leaders don’t just gather information, they translate it into something that fits their people.
