Seguin ISD Names Gary Gutierrez as Athletic Director, Head Football Coach SEGUIN, Texas (June 2, 2026)—The Seguin ISD Board of Trustees named Gary Gutierrez as the district’s new athletic director and head football coach at Seguin High School. The board approved Gutierrez’s hiring during tonight’s special meeting. Gutierrez has more than 25 years of experience in education and coaching, having worked in several districts around the state since 2000. He is no stranger to Seguin ISD, having taught at Seguin High School from 2003 to 2006, where he also served as the Matadors’ offensive coordinator. Gutierrez has also made stops in Levelland ISD, Houston ISD, Aldine ISD, and Calhoun County ISD. “We are excited to welcome Coach Gutierrez back to Matador Nation,” Superintendent Dr. Jack Lee said. “He brings the experience, leadership, and relationship-centered approach we need to move Seguin ISD athletics to the next level. I am excited to see him in action as he works to build strong programs, support coaches, and develop the student-athletes who will represent our district both on and off the field.” Gutierrez will return to Seguin after a 13-year stint at Northside ISD’s John Jay High School in San Antonio, where he is currently the athletic coordinator and head football coach, having finished the 2025 football season with a 9-2 record and a district title. During his time with the Mustangs, he led the team to its first area title in school history and earned accolades as the 2025 14-5A Coach of the Year and the 2023 Dave Campbell’s Texas Football 6A Coach of the Year Finalist. He will also serve as a head coach for the 2027 San Antonio Sports All-Star Football Game. Before his teaching and coaching career, Gutierrez earned a Bachelor’s in Criminal Justice from Hardin-Simmons University. He also holds a Master’s in Education Administration from Sul Ross University. His wife, Patricia, works for Northside ISD; they have three children, Jackson (20), Claire (18), and Miles (16). Gutierrez will join Seguin ISD effective immediately.
