Sharing these messages from a young Afghan writer in Herat. Two things I’ve heard time and time again from girls and women in Afghanistan- 1. Do not forget about us. 2. Share our voices - be our voice outside in the world. Using my voice is necessary, but what’s more important and needed is getting Afghan women’s voices out there in the world. Many struggle with internet connectivity, so many don’t have phones or tablets and computers, some (like me) use Google translate to communicate, some are scared to put their names out there for all to see, and some are absolutely certain they want their names next to their words. This young writer was earlier published in @usawamag , and one of her essays will soon be published in the @HooghlyReview later this year. We need all of us, we need to do whatever little we can do to make sure Afghan women’s voices don’t get suppressed- because this regime is working very hard at doing just that!

An Unexpected Adoption is a powerful, unforgettable, and hard-hitting memoir. Tina and Rog Thomas weren’t looking to adopt, but “One magical afternoon in a hospital ward, Mui saw me and screamed, and I fell in love with her”, Tina says. Doctors warned the couple that Mui would not survive infancy and doubted their ability to care for a child with Harlequin Ichthyosis. Mui is now 33, one of the fourth-longest surviving people living with the life-threatening genetic disorder, and the world’s first Rugby referee with Harlequin Ichthyosis. At its heart, the memoir is “a mother’s story, the story of one woman’s unlikely personal journey to escape the crushing trauma of her past, and in the process help an abandoned child escape hers.” It addresses the realities of raising a child with special needs, the impact of cyberbullying, and the complexities of mental health. Tina, Rog and Mui’s raw, personal account is about purpose, action and StandingUp4Others. Their story stands as a testament to courage, love, and unwavering commitment—a journey I am honoured to witness and share. coffeeandconversations.in/re… With @GirlBehindFace @mui_thomas @TinaThomas90 @rogthomasblog63

I’m grateful to the literary spaces that have shown solidarity and support for Afghan women’s work. Please share this submission call for Afghan women poets living in Afghanistan and in the diaspora. It’s an honour to edit and curate another collection of poetic works by Afghan women - this time for the Scotland based The Candyman’s Journal. #letafghanwomenspeak #endgenderapartheidinafghanistan #letherlearn #breadworkfreedom
Dear friends, I am thrilled to share about a creative partnership with the Scotland-based magazine, The Candyman’s Trumpet, curated by the amazing @JackCaradoc . This August, the magazine will shine a spotlight on poetry by Afghan women, with an entire section dedicated to their voices. I am honoured to serve as guest editor and curator for this special feature. August 2026 marks the six-year anniversary of the Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan. Since their return to power, their regime has issued approximately 140 edicts, decrees or rules that restrict the freedoms and rights of women and girls, including severe restrictions on creative expressions such as poetry and arts. For centuries, poetry has been both a deep-rooted tradition and a courageous act of resistance for Afghan women. Through this spotlight, we stand in solidarity and preserve the voices that are being silenced and repressed. With this spotlight, we bear witness to the daily realities of women and girls in Afghanistan today, and we say: keep reciting, keep writing. We are here, listening and reading. The submission call is open to Afghan women in Afghanistan and in the diaspora. Deadline - July 5th Please share widely within your writing communities. Please share @KateClanchy1 @faribanawa @minasharif @heatherbarr1 @NadiaHashimi @Fawziakoofi77 @Mariamistan @arianadelawari @NilofarMoradi2 @ZahraYusufi 🙏🏼 Many thanks.

I don’t often share the messages I receive from girls and women in Afghanistan, but I’m sharing this one I received just a few minutes back. I’m so grateful to the various platforms that have supported Afghan women in getting their voices out into the world, at a time when they are being silenced and suppressed. This message is from a young writer that I had emailed in regards to a submission call for Afghan poets. This is why I am upset with a platform like the @JaipurLitFest that hosted a Talb. Propagandist- Do your homework Jaipur Lit Fest. Things are not normal in Afghanistan, not even in the cities. They might be okay just for a tiny select few. Giving someone like him the mike on your stage is literally a slap in the face of every Afghan woman and girl fighting for her rights. Please use your influential platform to bring the right voices to light.

Very disappointing to see a Talib. Propagandist speaking for Afghanistan on this stage!!! At a time Afghan women are being killed, silenced, and literally erased from public life you could have invited an Afghan female author or journalist or activist.
Whats clear that in Afghanistan no change is possible from outside, so it has to come from inside. @saadmohseni spks with @rashmeerl @JLFLitfest #JLFLONDON2026

Your War, Our Lives is a vibrant, heartfelt collection of short stories crafted by Canadian-Afghan writer, consultant and cultural advocate @minasharif . Every story invites you into the heart of Afghan families and culture, leaving you eager to linger in their world a little longer. The stories share the viewpoints of many different characters, including Afghans living abroad and those still in the country. Even dogs and musical instruments step into the spotlight, each with their own tale to tell. What stood out to me were the subtle details and gentle nuances woven through each story. Together, they paint a vivid and real picture of everyday Afghans and ordinary people living their lives. The messages don’t shout; they’re beautifully and delicately woven into the stories. Highly recommended. #minasharif #yourwarourlives #bookreview #bookreccomendation #afghanstories

Author Emma Pei Yin’s debut novel, When Sleeping Women Wake, is a gripping tale of survival, resilience and courage that’s set during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong during World War II. This debut earned a spot on the ARA Historical Novel Prize longlist (2025) and claimed the Australian Indie Book Awards for Debut Fiction (2026). I had the opportunity to meet Emma at the Hong Kong Literary Festival @litfest_hk in March 2026, and I’m thrilled to introduce her work to our audience. coffeeandconversations.in/re…
