#OnThisDay 1959 Admiral of the Fleet the Earl Mountbatten became Chief of the Defence staff, and is still the longest holder of the post (6 yrs). During his time he oversaw the merging of 5 Depts of State including the Admiralty to create the Ministry of Defence. @DefenceHQ

#OnThisDay 2013 HMS TRENCHANT returned to @HMNBDevonport after 335 days away, most of which was east of Suez. This was the longest patrol by an @RoyalNavy #submarine and although the crew rotated, 7 completed the whole trip. The key stat. Is they got through 20,592 snorkers!

#OnThisDay 1982 the Type 22 Frigate HMS BRILLIANT destroyed 3 Argentine Skyhawks in the first operational use of @RoyalNavy Sea Wolf Missiles. Sea Wolf provided Point Defence for RN ships until earlier this year when it was withdrawn and all T23s will now carry Sea Ceptor.

#OnThisDay 1968 HM Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother opened @HMNBClyde in Faslane. The base was built as the home of the new Polaris Nuclear Submarines and is still the home of @RoyalNavy SSBNs and will eventually be the home of all RN submarines. @RNinScotland

#OnThisDay 1941 a boarding party under SLt David Balme from HMS BULLDOG capture the secret Enigma machine from U-110 after depth charging her to the surface.This discovery was one of the greatest ever intelligence coups and undoubtably saved thousands if not millions of lives.
