Truth to this in VFX. You are up against very passionate people who live and breathe their craft. If you don't put in the hours you won't be able to get to the level necessary to break in.
For 3D students: Most I’ve met simply aren’t doing the hours needed to get into the industry. Studying only 10:00-16:00 every day won’t cut it - particularly since only a portion of the day is spent on actual work.

Compositing is often just targeted color grading or lighting, pointed at specific VFX layers rather than the whole frame. But where a grade might be one or two passes, we're doing dozens of tiny adjustments. Many filmmakers aren't even aware this level of process exists. They think compositing is slapping on film grain or a simple greenscreen key - this is not the case. These micro aesthetic descisions are the reason you need compositing whether you're doing full CG shots, or live action films (if you want it to look good).

Couldn't find a good blending tool in Blender that works with messy photoscan UVs, so I made one. works by capturing an orthographic 1 sample render and reprojecting it, and blending by a custom u.i directional controller. might build this toolset out further if time allows and if people are interested

Wow
NASA HAS RELEASED OVER 12,000 IMAGES OF THE ARTEMIS II MISSION. Unbelievable perspectives captured by the Crew! The aurora on the eclipse is incredible.

A.I Generating some background rock assets with Comfy. Left is default, right is after a quick re-paint / texture in Substance to help it blend into my lava photogrammetry environment scans. Mainly painting it up with photography I took of the real volcano, and some other techniques. Messy topology quality doesn't matter much because it's DMP or proxy mesh workflows, but it does save some time for quick silhouttes and shapes.

More R&D for the current project. The Hue Fizzler takes a rainbow ID pass and slices it into discrete color bands using hue quantization - pick how many segments you want, and you've got that many independent ranges to target in your ID pass. Noise runs through each segment, and segments can be killed off independently, which lets the mask break apart in a flickery manner instead of fading uniformly. In other words, it makes your mask fizzle out in interesting ways. Useful for sparks, plasma explosions, etc etc.
