Conner Morguson(
@ConnerMorguson ) is a four star dynamo with the sickest handles in the building and range that stretches the defense, the kind of shifty combo guard who can score on all three levels with a silky smooth touch while also locking in as a savvy defender and dazzling passer who reads the floor two steps ahead, and his energy, court vision, and work ethic show up in every possession, making him a high character leader you build programs around.
Today, though, this was his gym, his crowd, his moment, and standing across from him was an old school vet with the famous two-inch vertical and a deep bag of gritty, no nonsense, grown man defense, fully prepared to give him no space, no freebies, and to make him earn everything with bumps, pressure, and chest to chest reality to see how those young legs handled some seasoned physicality.
When I called him out his expression never changed, calm and composed with that quiet competitive fire in his eyes, and as I tossed him the ball you could see the confidence immediately, because without hesitation he came straight at me rocking the ball on a string, mixing in a hesitation and a vicious crossover so sharp that before I could even settle into my stance I was unexpectedly conducting a full floor inspection while the crowd gasped and my ankles filed a formal complaint against my birth certificate.
Conner did not rush the moment; he blew by clean, gathered himself under control, and rose into a punishing middy that was pure as Sunday morning service, the net barely moving as the packed gym erupted, and I lay there negotiating with gravity and life choices while he turned with that slight smile that says respect is mutual, but mercy is not included.
As much as my pride felt insulted and my age questioned my career decisions, I could not help but respect the fearless warrior in front of me because that was high-level basketball under pressure, that was poise in a rivalry atmosphere with the student section rocking.
Now it is my ball, the crowd still buzzing, his teammates chirping, my knees having a team meeting, but do not get it twisted because there is still magic in this old school bag, physicality, patience, footwork that does not need a highlight tape to be effective, and I am bringing something extra on this next possession to restore a little pride for every veteran who has ever been crossed but refused to stay down in a high level gym where battles like this are earned, not given.
