Thanks, Dan. I was down at the World Cross CountryChamps in Tallahassee and was interviewed at the pre-race press conference by several running sites. That quote was totally spontaneous by me… but I stand by it! I had several interviews that wkend and musta gotten warmed up?!?
From Letsrun.com: ...2-time World XC Champion @CraigVirgin, had a great line about whether XC should be in the Winter Olympics: "If they can have breakdancing in the Summer Olympics, then we can certainly have cross country in the Winter Olympics."
Look forward to seeing as many of you there as can attend. Historic as it will be the very first sport championship in the new expended 18 team Big Ten Conference! And at a location near and dear to my heart. Many of my CC teammates will also be there… proud to say! Go Illini!
This is always one of the first things I put up in my classroom each year, the IHSA Track and Field Team State Medals that the EHS athletes have earned since @tigertrack1 became Head Coach! I was super excited to add the 2024 State Championship Medal!
Happy 69th Birthday to @IlliniTrackXC Hall of Famer @CraigVirgin . He competed in both the 1976 and '84 Olympic Games and was a member of 1980 Team USA as well. @usatf
Thanks Geric! The book took 7 years to research & write… a collaborative effort with my talented sports writer and book author! Describes how our sport critically evolved during the 70’s & 80’s. If anyone wants the book they can order it on my website craigvirgin.com.
In 1980 there were only two ways to react to the looming boycott. Either give up & perform half ass at the Trials… or raise the bar & treat the Trial’s as our own Olympic Games?!? Herb Lindsay dueled with me & my victory resulted in a meet record 27:46 that stood for 24 years!
I will always be proud of and take deep satisfaction in how the entire 10,000 m field competed so hard that day. We showed the world that we woulda had something to say had we been allowed to compete at Moscow one month later! Many athletes that week did something similar.
No athlete that competed in the US Olympic T & F Trials last month could ever imagine finishing top 3 to make the American team… and NOT being able to go to the Olympic Games!?!? Yet, that is what we faced at Eugene back in June 1980! It was very bittersweet!

@CraigVirgin
Rose & I had been intense competitors since ‘74…he might’ve beaten me more than I had beaten him at this point? Unlike some runners of today, I didn’t taunt or belittle him at or after the finish line! I invited him & Hans up to my level on the podium & shared my apple with him!
Inspired to write the above after watching a recent video of the finish of a NCAA conference championships race where a red haired white sprinter won and turned to taunt his two closest competitors over the final 4 strides… NOT celebrating his victory… but insulting them!
That video I referred to was a sad commentary on the present condition of our sports & general public’s lack of civil decency & class during competition or even public and state legislative/congressional discourse. I am now appalled by similar behavior by athletes in my sport!
This is a decent YouTube video of that Fri nite race up in Montreal in late Aug that ended my historic 1979 season. Most people don’t recall that I beat a great field to win the Falmouth road race just 5 days before. They don’t do it like that now, do they? We raced ALOT then!
No, I believe that is a photo from 1979 World Cup 10,000 m race where I got 2nd to Yifter in his 53 second last 400 finish. I led for most all of the race and shook off a lot of other top stars… only to get beat by the Yifter who won gold in 10,000/5000 m races at Moscow 1980.
