For example, Cleveland's Catholic schools barely beat the Ohio average for 3rd grade, foundational reading. Yet Steubenville public schools completely tromp far wealthier schools across the state.

Finally. Someone said it. About that “teach students how, not what, to think.” 👏👏👍🏽
Earlier this spring I was on campus at Pepperdine University. I was deep in a conversation with Pepperdine University President, Jim Gash. Gash is widely regarded as one of the best university presidents in the country. Almost simultaneously in the course of our conversation we realized that the familiar saying “we teach students how to think, not what to think” is a completely empty sentiment. Jim and I believe we do need to teach students WHAT to think. So we co-authored this piece for National Review. nationalreview.com/2026/06/y…

Lots of great stuff at @researchED_US. A few applicable and other take-aways: First, being more mindful of how my group set up our supplies when pushing into classrooms to reduce visual distraction, from @S_Oberle's wonderful work on executive functions. Get this best-seller!

While there is so much screaming that “parents need to be parents” regarding kids who can’t tie their shoes or use the bathroom or speak politely, can we also put a spotlight on parents who demand their kids be labeled as better than everyone else?

QUALITY MATERIALS SAVE $$, PEOPLE. Lots of $$. Shout it from the rooftops.
Emily Hanford’s Sold a Story exposed how Lucy Calkins & Fountas and Pinnell made millions selling curricula that didn’t teach kids to read. But here’s what doesn’t get talked about enough: ✅ Bookworms — evidence-based, FREE digital access ✅ Success for All — as low as $25/student The evidence-based options aren’t just better. They’re cheaper. So what exactly are districts paying for? 🤔 @ehanford #ScienceOfReading #LiteracyJustice

I have never imagined that ‘Gifted’ meant anything but this much more capricious view. Kinda surprised anyone saw it otherwise.
y'all are right that the general mood of this piece is wrong - very Harrison Bergeron on a moral level, supported by a warped-to-dishonest presentation of the actual facts. But "gifted" programs are mostly garbage, and defending them just to get one over on the haters isn't worth it. "Multiple measures" gifted identification *does* make the whole endeavor capricious and non-academic, but it's been on the rise for 20 years. If that's what "giftedness" truly is, then sure let's scrap it.

So that’s why no B2 flyover of the World Cup.
President Donald J. Trump has announced on Truth Social that, at his direction, U.S. Southern Command (SOUTHCOM) has carried out a lethal kinetic strike on Niño Guerrero, the alleged leader of Tren de Argua, in coordination with the Venezuelan authorities.

The best teacher prep programs usually share something in common: leaders who were willing to examine and follow research on behalf of students, even when it was uncomfortable. Dr. Ellen McIntyre has been that kind of leader at @NCStateCED, @CLT_COED, and now @UTKnoxville, building faculty buy-in for the science of reading and making tough decisions that put students and aspiring teachers first. All three programs now earn A grades on @NCTQ’s Teacher Prep Review. She shared her approach with us, and it's a useful read for anyone leading a prep program who wants to know how this kind of change plays out. teacherquality.nctq.org/revi…

Oh, my. Peggy and I shared many things, including the evacuation of Capitol Hill during Reagan’s funeral procession. Would love to have been at this.
Following the opening lunch of the National Summit on Civic Education, Peggy Noonan sat down with JMC's Tom Kelly to discuss America at 250 and reflect on our history, the American idea, and the next 250 years.

We can keep admiring this problem. Or, we can build systems that work around it. I continue to be stunned at the enthusiasm for the former.
