But not all satellites are the same.
Europe’s fleet of weather watchers includes two families – MetOp and #Meteosat, which use different orbits to provide complementary information for weather forecasting.
ALT Infographic distinguishing two satellites. MetOp has a polar orbit of 800km above Earth. It orbits Earth every 100 minutes. The data used by MetOp forecasts the weather up to 14 days ahead. Meteosat is 36000 km above Earth in a fixed position above the equator, keeping pace with the rotation of the planet. It returns images of Earth every 15 minutes and data provided are used to predict the weather up to 6 hours ahead.
