My favorite example: VUW (NZ). The uni spent $16.7 million on an IT systems overhaul that didn't function $6 million to fix it, plus enrollment losses caused. They cut 140 jobs to make up the deficit. Bonus: the architect of this, the DVC, was then chosen as Cardiff's VC.
Replying to @EdwardEGibbon
6) We spent waaaay too much on system x, we’re going to have to make some of you redundant.

125 MHz benchtop NMR of 1,4-diethylbenzene shows a simple spectrum from a para substituted aromatic ring. The ethyl groups act as a weak electron donating group, shifting the aromatic signals slightly upfield compared to rings without electron donating groups. Distinct aromatic, methylene, and methyl resonances make it an excellent example of substituent effects in aromatic NMR spectroscopy. It serves as a precursor to materials used in ion exchange resins. #NMR #NMRchat #BenchtopNMR #QM125 #NMRspectroscopy #Chemistry #Organicchemistry #Analyticalchemistry #14Diethylbenzene #Diethylbenzene #Para #Parasubstituted #EDG #Electrondonating #Upfield #Aromatic #Methylene #Methyl #Substituent #Ion #Ionexchange #Resins

"scientists peak at 30" is a weird meme. the data is pretty clear it's only true for mathematicians and theoretical physicists. experimentalists make their big contributions later (40's), scientists in "complex" fields (e.g. bio) make their big contributions later (40's) there's a huge amount of research on this. here is one review: nber.org/system/files/workin…

Mathematicians and scientists often peak in their 20s. Why? Maybe older scientists become stuck in their ways. Or maybe younger researchers feel free to be more creative. But @jacobkimmel's hypothesis is that this isn't because of social factors at all - it's evolution:

How IT procurement works in higher education: 1) You must use system x - it has capability y. Workarounds will not be tolerated. 2) Redesign operations around system x. 3) Provider of system x ramps up price. 4) Lose capability y. 5) Can you design a workaround?
