In some cases, advanced decay detection methods that use ultrasound may be used to map the areas of decay inside the tree's stem. It is rare, but occasionally necessary to recommend removal rather than retaining a tree - for instance, if the risk of the tree causing an accident..

Many pests and pathogens are fairly species-specific (e.g. ash dieback, oak processionary moth). So having a diverse portfolio of tree species helps resilience. Whether this needs to be at the level of a woodland or a landscape depends on your management objectives. @RJABuggs
