There are memorable debuts, and then there is Marcus Thames’ debut. Making his first major league appearance at Yankee Stadium and facing future Hall of Famer Randy Johnson, Thames sent the first pitch he saw in the majors into the left center field seats. He was just the 17th player, and second Yankee to homer in his first at-bat. Thames spent 10 seasons in the bigs as a player and is currently the hitting coach for the Kansas City Royals. He still holds the Detroit Tigers record for at-bats per home run (14.8)

Dodgers catcher Roy Campanella sets a new National League record for catchers with his 237th career home run. The 1957 season would be Campanella’s last in the majors, as he would suffer a career-ending spinal injury in January of 1958. In 10 seasons in Brooklyn, “Campy” won three MVP awards, and was an eight-time All-Star.

In the first game of a doubleheader between the Pirates and Padres, Dock Ellis threw a no-hitter while reportedly under the influence of LSD. Ellis said the threw his notorious no-no despite being unable to feel the ball or see the batter or catcher clearly.   Ellis walked eight and struck out six, but got great defensive support from his teammates. Ellis regretted taking the drug because it robbed him of what should have been one of his greatest memories. Ellis would start the All-Stsr game and win a World Series title with the Pirates in 1971. He retired after the 1979 season with a career record of 138-119.

“If the Pelicans want to move into the Top 10 for a player that they believe is a future star, I can respect that. But having that level of ambition without the direction of going along with it is how bad teams stay bad.” @DMGrubb Should Pels Trade Into Top 10?

If the Knicks finish this in 5, and the only game they lost was with Trump in the building, and they have the greatest comeback in playoff history, and they beat Wemby to stave off what was seen as inevitable…that’s a really great run.
