Social media ban is a Great idea but If you’re going to ban the No 1 pastime for our kids, you’d do well to think what resources you need to put in place to replace it. Youth clubs, dances, sport, crafts, music. It feels ridiculously old fashioned but we’ll need them

As an aside - and I’d be interested whether other columnists/substackers have done this - today’s was the first column I have written (in almost a decade of writing for the Times) where I deliberately tried to differentiate my content anything resembling AI-produced content. There is so much slop out there it was the first time I felt the need to actively write in a deliberately different style.

If you want a stark illustration of how (if you are being charitable!) ESG has moved on in the last 5 years, look at the widespread silence from institutional investors over SpaceX governance - and compare that to the boycotting of (for example) the Deliveroo IPO in 2021 on governance (and social) grounds. If you are being less charitable you might conclude ESG in its first iteration was always a convenient cloak for applying double standards.
