I wrote a thing about Orwell and "patriotism"; the odd and interesting "love" part in "love of country", that isn't dinner dates but might be to do with possession and jealousy. You should read it because it is amusing, some think insightful. abc.net.au/religion/the-patr…

There's NO stalemate in this war. Portraying it as such is highly misleading. Crimea is essentially cut off. Supply routes through the occupied areas are all under Ukrainian fire control. Moscow's air defences couldn't save their most important refinery this morning. Etc, etc.
The near-stalemate in Ukraine is causing the war’s centre of gravity to shift from the trenches and towards the factories and supply lines behind it econ.st/4vnMSXO Photo: AP

Many points made in my own line of thinking. Not least about whether we ought to be implying that SM as is will be fine among consenting adults.
The UK government has announced plans to introduce a social media ban for under-16s by spring 2027. Professor @Sander_vdLinden shares his reaction to today's news, and measures it against the evidence we already have about social media restrictions. Certainly one issue of the “think about it before you announce stuff” variety but I would suggest the bigger issue is how you arrange age verification for adults and who specifically has access to or can demand the documentation necessary to doing that.
“The Royal Society for Blind Children said that social media is a ‘lifeline’ for blind and partially-sighted young people. ..we are mindful that this ban risks cutting off vital routes to connection for children who are already too often excluded.’ metro.co.uk/2026/06/15/full-…

Like Stalin, Putin takes art and artists seriously.
In foto Semyon a Venezia

“defence isrhe thread underlying everything now” The problem is this was already the situation in 2016. Or indeed back in 1948 when Chirchill was campaigning for European Union _both_ as a response to 1914-45 _and_ as action against Moscow.
A few things happening at once that people should connect. Russia is now linked to the arson attacks on the Prime Minister's house and car last year. Shocker. And we all saw what happened the moment that story broke. Our feeds flooded with a different story about who the men were and why they did it. That's the operation. The arson is one half. The disinformation campaign is the other. Flood the zone, muddy the water, get the country shouting at itself instead of asking who is behind it. And at the same time, a chunk of the accounts pushing Scottish independence on X went dark the night Israel hit Iran's nuclear sites. Ask yourself why. Why would hostile states be interested in sowing division across the country? This is exactly what I mean when I say defence is the thread underneath everything now. Again, it isn't tanks on a border. It's an arson attack on the PM's front door and state-sponsored disinformation campaigns in the replies. It's the argument about breaking up our country being run out of Tehran. This is why resilience matters. And it's bigger than just factchecking a tweet. It's energy we can rely on. Industry we actually own. Institutions that are rock solid. Communities that don't split and fracture the moment someone pushes them. A country that is built to take a punch. That's the job now.

This is a brilliant investigation. It shows what many of us knew. Hostile states are supporting both Islamist & far right causes in order to divide us. If you are echoing those narratives you are aiding & abeting a hostile state. bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c8r2…

Putin attacks churches and kills Christians in Ukraine, and yet some in the West still praise the Russian dictator for his Christian values. Is it naïveté or just money?

Perhaps Putin hit Lavra Pecherska because the Orthodox monastery in Kyiv was already famous while Moscow was still a forest. I hope that this outrageos attack disabuses Christians the world over of the absurd idea that the old KGB colonel is a defender of the faith.

This is broadly my opinion although I worry that a policy like this doesn’t have concrete effect _as_policy_ but rather and simply as forming a definite social expectation or norm, rather as might an edict from the Pope. Parents may expect something else tho..
Well done, UK Govt; well done PM Starmer. UK Parents love the policy, and the evidence keeps mounting that heavy social media use causes a variety of harms. See 7 lines of evidence laid out here: afterbabel.com/p/seven-lines…

It is rather as if, having spent a decade or so dreaming about a regulated SM that wasn’t orientated solely around maximising profits for US based robber barons who reject democratic oversight as equivalent to communism, we have now concluded that Zuckerberg Musk et al are it.

And that since they are driving anyone who uses their products potty as a _designed_mechanism_of_profit_taking_ it’s only OK to inflict this digital madhouse on adults. Well, is it OK to inflict it on adults? Really? Why?

Damning assessment of Palestine Action by Appeal Court judges: “The whole premise of Palestine Action is to cause damage to property belonging to Elbit and other companies trading lawfully in the United Kingdom. It is a covert organisation that has revealed little about itself in these proceedings. Its activities are carried out by unidentifiable selves whose objective is to avoid detection, as reflected amongst other things in the underground manual. The future threats and risks posed to third-party individuals and property by Palestine action were perhaps the most important factors to weigh in the balance.”
