One of the most intriguing players in JUCO basketball has a story that’s worth talking about
Meet 6’9 Ramel Bethea who’s looked like a D1 prospect this season averaging 13 PPG, 8 RPG and 4 BPG however he hasn’t played organized basketball in years prior to this
Ramel graduated in the year of 2014 at the height of 6’3, after taking time to decide what he wanted to do for college, he enrolled in the Navy where he’d spend the next few years of his life serving
During that time he was working to become a Firefighter, his role in the Navy was to be responsible in engine rooms onboard Navy warships.
however during the time of service he grew 6 inches to 6’9 also having a 7’4 wingspan in the process. Ramel used to play basketball but he never had aspirations to go college until the growth spurt.
In the Navy Ramel finished as a Navy Petty Officer of the 3rd Class and during 2022 Ramel Participated in the Armed Forces Men’s basketball championship at the Naval base. Which gained him some attention from local Juco’s
Ramel enrolled to a Juco this past season where he’s been one of the most productive players in the state of California
This year it’s the first time he’s received a call from a D1 coach, it’s the first time he’s worked with a trainer, first time he’s had scouts watch him… Ramel’s story is prime example of how unexpected life can be.
Now he has a chance to go D1, receive NIL and go provide for his family
He’s received interest from St Bonnie’s, Texas A&M, Louisiana Tech and few more D1’s
