Two foreign nationals have pleaded GUILTY to human smuggling charges related to the crash of a tractor-trailer packed with at least 160 illegal aliens which resulted in the deaths of more than 50 people, including unaccompanied children, and injured over 100 more. “This tragic event shows that human smugglers do not care about the illegal aliens they come in contact with and transport despite the numerous risks, including extreme heat and dangerous travel conditions,” said @AAGDuva. “This defendant and her co-conspirators maximized their profits by packing more than 100 men, women, and children into a tractor trailer, which ultimately ended in an accident that claimed the lives of 56 people.” Read more: justice.gov/opa/pr/guatemala…

Iowa Man Convicted of Sex Trafficking and Drug Distribution “Dave Shumpert preyed on vulnerable young women, using violence, drugs, and their fears of homelessness, to profit from their exploitation,” said @AAGDuva. “He even punched them in the face and grabbed their hair to coerce them to perform commercial sex acts. Human trafficking and preying on vulnerable victims have no place in our communities. This jury verdict will ensure that the defendant is separated from society once he is sentenced for these crimes.” Read more: justice.gov/opa/pr/iowa-man-…

“These defendants allegedly induced young children to make the treacherous journey from Guatemala to the United States, and then lied to government authorities to obtain custody, abusing the very program designed to protect vulnerable children,” said @AAGDuva. “Through Joint Task Force Alpha, the Criminal Division is focused on prosecuting alien smuggling and fraud in the UAC program.  In this country, we will not stand for illegal aliens helping to smuggle children into the United States and then sexually assault them.”
Yesterday in Ohio, indictments were returned charging three illegal aliens from Guatemala for international smuggling of unaccompanied alien children (UAC) and defrauding the government, while another illegal alien was sentenced to prison for smuggling a UAC to the U.S. in 2023 and then fraudulently obtaining custody of the child who he then sexually abused. “For too many years, under the prior administration, unaccompanied children were smuggled to the United States and then taken in by a mismanaged government program guided by reckless policy direction,” said Acting Attorney General @DAGToddBlanche. “Instead of protecting children, these defendants and others allegedly took advantage of the program and used it to entice the illegal smuggling of unaccompanied children to the United States and, as the sentence of Tiul Xi shows, leave them vulnerable to sexual assault, trafficking, and other exploitation.” Read more: justice.gov/opa/pr/three-ill…

Union Leaders Convicted of Racketeering, Fraud, and Embezzlement of Union Dues “The Boilermakers Union members were supposed to get representation out of their hard-earned money used to pay union dues,” said @AAGDuva. “What they got instead is their money wasted on lavish trips and dinners, and unearned vacation payouts for the union leadership. Union dues must be handled with care and used for the benefit of the dues paying members. Union leadership that steals from the American worker will face prosecution, conviction, and prison time.” The picture below is the hotel in Paris, France, where the defendants held an executive council meeting for the Kansas-based Boilermaker Union. 🔗: justice.gov/opa/pr/union-lea…

“The superseding indictment in this case highlights the dangers associated with human smuggling,” said @AAGDuva. “The criminal networks engaging in this do not care about the people they are smuggling. They only care about money and themselves. They endanger lives and will commit heinous crimes if they believe their network has been exposed and their livelihood is on the line. Through Joint Task Force Alpha working with the District of New Mexico, DOJ will prosecute this case to the end with the victims at the forefront of seeking justice.” Read more: justice.gov/opa/pr/three-new…
