The European Commission’s proposal for the next Multiannual Financial Framework
#MFF will shape the EU budget and priorities for the next financial cycle. Despite promising to be the largest ever EU budget, the current proposal only includes a modest real increase compared to the previous one.
Several concerns emerged during the discussion, including:
◉ A shift towards greater centralisation in the new MFF, potentially at the expense of
#cohesion, and the inherent tensions that allocation of funds will generate.
📈 A substantial increase in external action funding, which includes enlargement, but also new priorities such as defence, raising questions about how resources will be allocated.
📉 The risk of insufficient funding for reforms in candidate countries and uncertainty surrounding new accessions. It remains to be seen how the inclusion of potential new candidates will be managed.
Participants also looked at the future of the European Union, the state of
#Accession preparations and the current situation in Serbia, including the impact on the region – in particular, on Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro, North Macedonia, and Kosovo.
