You might have heard me harp on about "encoder effects" in the last few years... and now, our review paper on the topic is finally out in Affective Science! link.springer.com/article/10…
Another year, another spectacular @PsychScience meeting! Presenting our research, sharing ideas, meeting scholars, and forging new collaborations never gets old. It was extra special attending with @stephanie_mnuel this year. Already looking forward to APS 2026!✌️
Today's the day: #APS25DC kicks off in Washington, DC! @DanielNault_ and I are representing the @DSECLab and presenting new findings from our recent studies. Come say hi - we'd love to chat!
Looking forward to #APS25DC this week! I’ll be presenting work showing how youth modulate their vocal cues during emotional conversations with friends vs. caregivers in the Developmental Flash Talk Session on Thursday at 4pm, and during the poster session later at 7:30pm. (1/2)
I’ll also be presenting work showing how autistic and non-autistic youth differ in emotional and lexical prosody recognition skills during the same poster session on Thursday at 7:30pm. Stop by and nerd out about nonverbal behaviour with me! 😁 (2/2)
The @SRCDtweets#SRCD2025 conference was a blast! @RileyJTBonar & @DanielNault_ gave superb talks about their research, & Daniel chaired an excellent symposium. It was great to hear about exciting new work in the field, and to connect with so many colleagues & friends. 🙏
Headed to #SRCD2025 this week? 🥳 Come check out my symposium focused on the development of nonverbal behaviour on Saturday at 12:10 PM in RM 209AB. We show how experience shapes nonverbal behaviour in multiple nonverbal channels, and across multiple developmental stages. (1/2)
Our findings highlight how patterns of nonverbal behaviour differ between children and adults, are subject to developmental maturation during adolescence, and are shaped by culture and early adversity. Can't wait to see you there! 🙌 (2/2)
Today is #AutismAwarenessDay !
Autism is a spectrum that includes a diverse range of characteristics and symptoms that vary in intensity and presentation among individuals. Today we celebrate all the unique minds, strengths, perspectives, and voices of individuals with autism!
The loss of a legend- Kanzi, the language-competent bonobo, has died age 44.
Kanzi was exceptional in so many ways and offered us profound insights into the linguistic & cognitive capacities of great apes.
He has taught us so much and will be hugely missed. @ApeInitiative
Think back to the last conversation that you had: what did you notice? 🤔 Maybe you noticed a smile, or maybe they avoided eye contact. These are examples of nonverbal cues! 🙊 This post explains nonverbal cues and their importance in communication. (✒️Selena Gabrielli)
#FunFactFriday: Establishing common ground during a conversation improved participants’ memory in an experimental task. 🗣️ This finding from @DanielNault_'s MSc work supports the idea that common ground and memory are linked conversational processes! (📷Jake Hartwig-MacDonald)
I recently published a Commentary in Affective Science (@affectScience), highlighting the need for researchers to more explicitly consider multimodal nonverbal cues in research on emotional communication. Happy to share the link--read it here: buff.ly/4dlEwGq 🙂

Georgia brought Lil Jon out for what is essentially the most lit roll call ever.
Fun fact: Lil Jon was once a contestant on The Apprentice. Suck it, donald. 😂
