As wealth concentrates, so does power — the power to influence elections, shape policy, tilt markets and define the terms of public debate. That’s why we’ve been told for far too long that tax reform is politically infeasible, too complex, and too radical. Taxing billionaires is not radical. What is radical is allowing a system where extreme wealth exists alongside widespread hardship — and where billionaires can in effect opt out of contributing to the society that made their success possible.

In the 1950s, one out of every three workers in this country carried a union card. Today, it’s fewer than one in ten. That decline didn’t happen by accident. It’s the result of decades of coordinated attacks by corporations that have grown richer while working people have been asked to settle for less. That’s the crisis we’re living through: deepening inequality, eroding stability, and a political system that too often answers to wealth instead of the will of the people. Union Now is changing that — rebuilding the power of working people from the ground up. Yesterday, alongside @BernieSanders, I was proud to stand with organizers and workers at the @UnionNow_ rally.

If you work, you owe your thanks to former labor Secretary Frances Perkins – the architect behind the 40-hour workweek, the minimum wage, unemployment insurance, and Social Security. On her birthday today and every day, America’s unions celebrate her legacy and leadership.

On her birthday, we remember Frances Perkins, the first woman to serve in a presidential Cabinet and the architect behind Social Security, minimum wage, and the right to organize. She didn’t just shape policy, she changed what workers could expect from this country.
