CWEMSE DAY 0
Daily Travel (Total): 1180 km (1180 km)
Knot of the Day: ā
And so it beginsā¦
#MD73 Brian Drury,
#MD74 David Baskin, and I have all arrived at Poplar Creek Farm just below Pilot Mountain State Park. Our first week of expeditionary camping begins here tonight, camping underneath the walnut trees and Carolina night sky. The Carolina Wilderness EMS Externship starts tomorrow morning with our 1-week BRATT module (Basic Rescue & Technical Training) held on Pilot Mountain, run by
#MD53 Chris Davis.
When we expanded out of our Burke County environment in 2021 we made the entire state our classroom. Over the course of this 1 month medical school rotation our curriculum will take us to the highest point on the East Coast and the deepest gorge. Weāll sleep under the mountain skies and on beaches next to the Atlantic Ocean, with ten or more days of the rotationās thirty days spent overnight in the field. I am estimating we will travel over 10,000 km by car, canoe, ferry, helicopter, and ambulance. We will work on an epic remote island where emergencies can only be evacuated by ferry or helicopter and spend two days learning about remote and austere medical and SAR operations within the Quallah Boundary with the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians. Weāll train 40 medical students in wilderness medicine skills at paddle-up only campgrounds and visit EMS stations accessible only by 4 wheel drive beach-modified ambulances. Weāll train in lakes, rivers, mountains, gorges, waterfalls, dunes, forests, and wilderness areas throughout the state overseen by a variety of state and federal authorities. There weāll learn about being effective wilderness EMS practitioners and leaders in all those different environments. Most importantly, as an experiential education training program, there will be a vast curriculum still awaiting to unfold for us as we explore what the month brings.
Taking a cue from Outward Bound, we will be crew not passengers, and the entire month will be driven by esse quam videri values.
In short, itās Externship time, yāall!!
