MakSPH Hosts Johns Hopkins Team to Advance Community-Based Drowning Surveillance in Uganda This afternoon, @Makerere University School of Public Health Dean, Prof. @RhodaWanyenze, together with Dr. @DavidMusoke14, Chair of the Department of Disease Control and Environmental Health, and Dr. @Oporiah, Head of @TRIADUnit, were delighted to host Prof. William Weiss and Dr. James Kumwenda from @JohnsHopkinsSPH. The engagement highlighted the long-standing collaboration between MakSPH and Johns Hopkins, spanning over three decades in areas including health systems strengthening, public health training, supportive supervision, and research collaboration.

Dr. David Musoke Receives International Award for Malaria Research Dr. @DavidMusoke14, Associate Professor and Chair of the Disease Control and Environmental Health Department at @Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH), has received the Low- and Middle-Income Country (LMIC) Investigator Award at the 2026 International Behavioural Trials Network (@IBTNetwork) Conference, held from May 7–9, 2026, in Montreal, Canada. He was recognised for more than 10 years of impactful research on integrated malaria prevention in rural communities in Uganda. Dr. Musoke’s work has advanced evidence on malaria prevention and contributed to improved community health practices, particularly in Wakiso District. The award honours an independent investigator residing and working in a low- or middle-income country who has made outstanding scientific contributions in behavioural interventions and public health. Congratulations to Dr. Musoke on this well-deserved international recognition.

Congratulations to Associate Professor David Musoke a distinguished Fellow of @unasuganda

Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) congratulates Associate Professor David Musoke on his appointment as Head of the Department of Disease Control and Environmental Health, following a decision by the Makerere University Appointments Board at its 795th Meeting held on 6th May 2026. Assoc. Prof. Musoke is a scholar of international standing with over 150 peer-reviewed publications and deep expertise in environmental health, malaria prevention, and community health systems. He currently serves as President of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) for 2026 to 2028, the first Ugandan to hold this global position, and is a Senior Visiting Fellow at Nottingham Trent University and an Affiliate Member of the African Academy of Sciences. His appointment places MakSPH's environmental health agenda in the hands of one of Africa's most globally connected public health scholars, and we look forward to the leadership and momentum he will bring to the department. Dr. David Musoke has taken office as President of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) at the 18th World Congress in Dubrovnik, Croatia. An Associate Professor at @MakSPH and member of EHWAU, he moves into the role, succeeding Dr. Bruno Cvetkovic, who handed over at the close of the Congress. Dr. David Musoke Takes Office as IFEH President Last evening, Dr. David Musoke assumed office as President of the International Federation of Environmental Health (IFEH) during the 18th IFEH World Congress on Environmental Health as the global body's leader in Dubrovnik, Croatia. Dr. Musoke, an Associate Professor at Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH) and a member of the Environmental Health Workers’ Association of Uganda (EHWAU), has served as President-Elect since 2024. He now begins a two-year term leading the global body. The outgoing President, Dr. Bruno Cvetkovic of the Croatian Chamber of Health Professionals, congratulated him and handed over leadership at the close of the Congress. In the same Congress, Uganda secured the bid to host the 19th IFEH World Congress in Kampala in 2028. Research probes link between maize farming and malaria risk in Uganda A joint study by @Makerere University School of Public Health and @OpenUniversity is examining whether maize cultivation near homes may be contributing to malaria risk in Uganda, as growing evidence links livelihoods and everyday economic activities to disease transmission. The research was advanced during a stakeholder workshop held on April 15 in Kololo, bringing together researchers, policymakers, and practitioners to explore how agricultural practices are shaping malaria patterns in both rural and urban settings. Building on earlier findings that farming, livestock keeping, and night-time work influence exposure, the study points to maize cultivation as a potential driver of increased mosquito density around households. With malaria remaining a leading cause of illness and death in Uganda despite sustained control efforts, the research signals a shift toward understanding how livelihoods, environment, and daily activities intersect to sustain transmission, and what this means for designing more effective, context-specific interventions. We are excited to join the Walk Against Malaria 2026 as partners to reaffirm Makerere University School of Public Health (MakSPH)’s role in advancing malaria control and elimination in Uganda and across Africa. For decades, we have contributed through rigorous research, workforce development, and community-based interventions. We continue to generate evidence on malaria treatment and prevention while strengthening leadership through initiatives such as the African Leadership and Management Training for Impact in Malaria Eradication (ALAMIME), equipping professionals across high-burden countries with the skills to design and scale effective responses. This work, spanning research, policy engagement, and implementation, supports national efforts to translate evidence into action and improve malaria outcomes. We are joining this national campaign because malaria remains a leading cause of illness and death in Uganda, disproportionately affecting children and vulnerable communities. The Walk provides a platform to mobilise collective action, strengthen public awareness, and align partnerships toward a malaria-free Uganda. We invite our staff, students, alumni, and partners to join us in this national effort, step forward, lend your voice, and be part of the movement to end malaria.
