This non-answer is adorable.
Any parent and applicant planning to attend the Sussex University Open Day today, we can save you the trouble: these are the non-answers staff is told to give you. To send your staff out with this nonsense and treat visitors to this ChatGPT approach is disrespectful to all.

This kind of grim stuff is all over UK universities at the moment - sympathies with those at Sussex. I think the market reformers of the early 2000s believed universities would compete on quality of education. It hasn’t quite worked out like that, unfortunately.

Who wants to be HoD? Not a reluctant temporary servant, but someone who wants to be Dean, which is in turn someone who wants to be PVC, who in turn wants to be DVC, and ultimately after the big prize of the VC payout. At every stage, selling out the university is rewarded.
Sadly, all academics today know that “a management role” on your CV is the only way to get beyond SL. My father was a STEM academic: in his day HoD was an irksome, temporary role. Now everyone longs to be VHoD, Director of Learning & Teaching (DOLT, seriously!) or whatever.

Yup. Give management roles to people you want to be promoted. Stop others getting them. Strengthen cliques and marginalise others. Standard 'go to' for quite a few managers.

University corporate bullshit at its very worst. Senior Execs reall aren't very bright, just dishonest, greedy bullies.

The Hollowing Out of Britain’s Universities "In the wake of the reforms of 2010-12 came the senior managers who called what we published “outputs”, wore sharp suits and stern looks, circulated spreadsheets, and spoke only in PowerPoint bullet-points." ... "The middle managers were not unlike the prison guards in Zimbardo’s ill-fated 1970s experiment, gradually intoxicated by the petty sovereignties and sanctioned cruelties suddenly available to them." by Frederick Attenborough cafeamericainmag.com/the-hol…

Q: will mass redundancies interfere with my university experience? A: of course not! We made academics irrelevant long ago. You won't notice the difference. Also, more redundancies to come!

The brass neck to come out and boast about this after higher education has lost over 13,000 staff because the government refuses to intervene. Teacher numbers overall are down btw. It's more lies like 'we will not raise taxes for working people'. Labour in name only.
📰 Did you see the news? We’ve got over 4,600 new teachers in the places they’re needed most, supporting every child to achieve and thrive.
Community note
Total state-funded school teachers fell by 1,900 FTE to 466,372 in 2025/26, with declines in primary and secondary. The 4,600 figure excludes primary schools and includes further education against a 2023 baseline. …e-education-statistics.service.gov.uk/find-statistic… gov.uk/government/pub…

Service should be intrinsically valuable. That’s why we don’t pay you to do it. But we do punish if you don’t do it.

Easy enough question to ask and for him to answer, how much has HR increased, how much more has been spent on consultancy, how much more on buildings and how much more on management pay?

Universities are leaning into AI because they have spent years failing to defend themselves from criticism that what they are offering is irrelevant. This is a way to appease their critics, which is ironic, because it erases the value of what they are asking people to pay for.

It looks like the government is about to slash the ‘strategic priorities grant’. This is niche, but important. It will add to pressure on UK universities at a moment of crisis. It is also a truly spectacular example of joined-up policy.

Sabbatical applications are a competitive process. From now on, we'll be instituting a faculty-wide 'battle royale' with the survivor getting a semester to do institutionally approved research. Topics include nothing related to your research interests, but do still apply!
