Waiting is a losing game and children and their futures are on the losing end of the game...
It takes 4 times longer to intervene in 4th grade than in 1st grade. The longer we wait to identify a child that struggles to read, the more time, money & remediation is needed, not to mention the impact on our mental health. #dyslexia #dontwait Quote: the awesome @GaabLab

Yes, assessment of learning and yes, assessment for learning. And also, assessment to inform our teaching. If we are not using evidence of learning to be responsive, to differentiate, and to plan for our learners, we are missing the mark.

Assessment as learning is key to building metacognitive powers. We observe the learning, notice strengths & challenges, plan ways to bolster & stretch… we need learners to set goals, monitor & adjust, then find evidence of meeting goals - assessment is learning for everyone💫.

Hey educators, if you want your students to learn how to read, give them more difficult text. You can’t teach reading to students that already know how to read the text you gave them! #edchat #education #reading @ReadingShanahan

Ts reflecting on what happens when they consistently devote time to conferring: "It gives me the opportunity to really know each student as a reader. My teaching is better when I confer." And the students moved up levels. #independentreading

I found valuable take-aways about Emily Hanford’s podcast in this blog. Others have made these same points, but maybe coming from this source, more people will accept that reading instruction is not as simple as it’s being portrayed.
