JD Vance recently said “the professors are the enemy.”
A certain right-wing think tank is busy combing through hundreds of my employment records, including my personnel file—which is strong. They’re desperate for any way to discredit me or my book, The Privateers.
There seems to be some special fixation they have with why, in 2020, I left the research center I founded at MSU in 2016. So I’ll tell you.
What happened is that I could not keep up with the pace of a growing organization. During a reappointment process that would have committed me to 3 more years, I decided I couldn’t do it anymore, and stepped aside. We had an outstanding co-director and a managing director who deserved to run the center entirely, without me squatting on an honorary title.
During the resulting leadership transition process, I continued to insist on having many things done my way, and in doing so made things harder for my team than they needed to be. Especially once the pandemic hit. I regret that. But eventually we settled on a resolution, I went back to my full-time faculty role, and everyone moved on.
There you have it.
I stand by the sum total of my career, and by The Privateers👇
