After all, Karmelo said "touch me and see what happens". He identified himself as a potentially dangerous individual and thus Austin should've treated him that way from the start.
He didn't do that because in civil society, people with an IQ above 75 generally understand there are levels to the escalation of a verbal/physical confrontation.
There's no reason to go straight from 0 to 10 over a space in a tent. People with basic self control and emotional maturity understand this.
It seems to be his position these social norms are either fake, or have disappeared for some reason.
