More images have been released showing the moment Royal Marines stormed a sanctioned Russian oil tanker in the English Channel.
Defence sources have said today the operation was weeks in the making.
Prime Minister Keir Starmer said: “This operation delivers yet another blow to Russia and reminds those fueling Putin's war in Ukraine that they cannot hide.
"I want to pay tribute to all those involved, including our Armed Forces and law enforcement officers who keep this country safe 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.”
BREAKING: Royal Marines, with support of personnel from the National Crime Agency, have boarded a sanctioned Russian oil tanker in the English Channel for the first time.
The vessel, the Smyrtos, was seized during a six-hour military operation which involved aircraft from the Maritime Air Group (Chinooks, Merlin Mk4 and Wildcat), an RAF P-8 aircraft, as well as frigate HMS Sutherland and minehunter HMS Ledbury.
The boarding comes days after Sir Keir Starmer had two of his defence minister resign over failures to deliver the defence investment plan and almost three months since the Prime Minister authorised the military to seize sanctioned tankers that are part of Putin’s shadow fleet.
Hundreds of Russian vessels belonging to the fleet have passed through the Channel unchallenged since March.
