Million dollar idea: put data centers next to public pools so the waste heat from the data centers is used to heat the pool.

It's hard to overstate how much of an outlier California is for its slow vote-counting relative to literally any other state or almost any other industrialized democracy.

"Unless it's a top university, go to the cheapest one that you like." This is the right advice for those deciding on which college to attend when thinking about future employment Going to Boston University or Oberlin just won't matter h/t @auren

A PARENT’S JOURNEY THROUGH YOUTH SPORTS: Age 5: “He’s got a cannon.” Age 6: “He’s the fastest kid out there. Coach said so.” Age 7: “Rec ball isn’t challenging him anymore.” Age 8: “We tried out for select. Obviously made it.” Age 9: “$2,800 for the season. Plus uniforms. Plus tournaments. Plus hotels.” Age 10: “Cooperstown is basically a family vacation, right?” Age 11: “He needs a hitting guy. And a pitching guy. And probably a mental performance coach.” Age 12: “I’m not a crazy sports parent. The OTHER parents are crazy.” Age 13: “We changed schools. For academics. (And also baseball.)” Age 14: “Showcases are a requirement at this age.” Age 15: “Ya his ranking just ticked up. We’re cooking.” Age 16: “He just needs to get seen by the right school.” Age 17: “The D1 schools want him to walk on. He’ll earn a spot by sophomore year.” Age 18: “Okay, D2 is actually really competitive.” Age 19: “He’s redshirting. Strategic.” Age 20: “He’s focusing on school now.” Age 21: “You know what? He’s so much happier.” Roughly 7% of high schoolers play in college. About 1.5% of those get drafted. Less than half of draftees ever play one day in the big leagues. The odds of our kids going pro are somewhere between “struck by lightning” and “find a $100 in old shorts.” I love youth sports (all my kids play a bunch of them) just keep a good perspective my friends. ✌️

Oh to have been in the room when this clause was added.
Washington, D.C. will not let employers use noncompetes on most workers earning under roughly $160,000 a year. Unless you are a casual babysitter, because apparently the teenager watching your kids is a major trade-secret risk.

As summer comes into view, always remember that more Europeans regularly die in heat waves than Americans die in guns violence.

Just a friendly warning. We don’t even make $200k per year in Congress despite working nearly 140 days. If we aren’t properly compensated, a lot of us will go to the private sector and you will be left with some real idiots in Congress.

And how many murders are committed each year with a muzzle loader? Probably fewer that the number of people murdered with hammers, yet we don’t regulate those.
A musket from 1776 can fire a lead ball at a velocity of around 1,000 feet per second. Imagine what that can do to a human body. Yet under federal and most state laws, it’s exempt from gun regulations. Many antique or replica guns aren’t considered firearms and even convicted felons can own them.

Every time I save a PDF, I think about that lady who pointed out how insane it is that the easiest way to create one is by lying to your computer and telling it you are about to print something.

Texas just passed California in utility-scale solar. And it's not close in wind or energy storage.

Everyone who cares about climate should understand this. Texas, with no pro-climate policies, has blown passed California in clean energy. In large part because Texas has less red tape and makes it easier to build.

One of the biggest complaints I hear from GenX about Y and Z is that they are the most eco friendly and yet they never turn off the damn lights. I get it, lights today are all LED and cost nothing to run, but in our day we waited in line for days to fill our gas tank and turning off the lights was going to save the whales, the pandas and those starving kids in Africa.

We, as a society, have taken two-factor authentication too far. Logging into my bank account and into my Chipotle account shouldn't be the same process.

Well that went well…
I've warned for months that a @JetBlue-@SpiritAirlines merger would have led to fewer flights and higher fares. @JusticeATR and @USDOT were right to stand up for consumers and fight against runaway airline consolidation. This is a Biden win for flyers! apnews.com/article/jetblue-s…
