As someone who spent a couple of years sitting at the feet of Acharya' jee @Advait_Prashant (being a student) studying the Bhagavad Gita, something shifted irreversibly inside me: I can no longer watch religious traditions (any tradition, including my own Muslim heritage) harm children in the name of “spirituality” and stay silent. Acharya taught us that true scripture is meant to liberate the mind, not imprison it; it is fire that burns ego, not a whip that breaks a child’s spirit. Every time I see these viral videos now (a little boy collapsing in tears after memorising the entire #Quran, adults cheering as if he’s been touched by God instead of pushed to the edge), something boils in me. This is no longer “their problem” or “our beautiful tradition.” This is my community still traumatising its children, century after century, and calling the tears “khushu” and the breakdown “love for Allah.” I stayed quiet for too long out of guilt and fear of being labelled Islamophobic. No more. If the Gita made me fall in love with truth, then truth now demands I speak when I see a 10-year-old’s childhood sacrificed on the altar of mechanical memorisation.

📰The first news is from Baghpat, Uttar Pradesh where a girl named Shivani (21) was killed by her whole family (parents, brother and cousin sister) just because she wanted to marry someone of her own choice. They call it Honour killing 📌 Which is the murder of a person—usually a young woman or her partner—by their family or community to “restore honour” that is perceived to have been lost due to: •Love marriage without family consent •Inter-caste or inter-religious relationships •Elopement or defying traditional marriage customs 🪾In most of the cases it's female who get killed in honour killing than of male partner, why? Obviously because of deeply rooted patriarchal norms, control over female sexuality, and societal obsession with so called "family honour". Western UP seems to be the hotspot of in such cases, As over 30% of India’s honour killings happen in this region, with key districts including Meerut, Baghpat, Saharanpur, Bareilly zone, and Agra; like this very one case. When I searched for the honour killing cases in India, to my surprise the list wasn't small and most of those cases were not very old, some of them were reported only a few months:– ------ 🔥 Recent Cases Across India Morena (MP): 18‑year‑old Maliska shot by her grandfather over her relationship with a relative. [June 11, 2025] Greater Noida (UP): Neha Rathore killed by father & brother for marrying across caste lines. [June 17, 2025] Amritsar (Punjab): Sukhpreet Kaur and her lover slit to death by her father after eloping. [June 5, 2025] Siwan (Bihar): Sanjay Kumar Mahto beaten to death by girlfriend’s family for their relationship. [May 12, 2025] Chittoor (Andhra Pradesh): Yasmin Banu found dead after interfaith marriage. [March 2025] Hyderabad (Telangana): Police constable Nagamani killed by brother post inter-caste marriage. [April 2025] --- 📊 Key National Statistics 2014–15 NCRB jump: Reported honour killings rose from 28 to 251, a staggering 793% increase, following new tracking methods . Under‑reporting prevails: NCRB logged ~33 cases in 2021, while NGOs estimate 300–400 yearly, as many are hidden as suicide or domestic violence . Domination by a few states: UP, MP, TN, Punjab, Bihar, AP, Telangana and others chronically report multiple cases yearly . ------ 🗞️The second news is a judgement delivered by the Allahabad High Court on May 12. According to which; An Allahabad High Court judge, citing threats to the “social fabric”, has created new hurdles for couples to elope. As a result to this order, The Uttar Pradesh government has banned city-hopping for marriage registrations of couples who elope. Which doesn't seem like a solution to the problem of Honour Killing but rather a help to the khap panchayats and local councils of Uttar Pradesh, which silently supports such acts. ⚖️Justice denied? Another unusual aspect of the judgment is its final direction. After a lengthy examination of the alleged fraud, the court disposed of all 125 petitions by couples seeking police protection. The couples were simply directed to approach the local senior superintendent of police who, the court said, would verify their claims and then take “appropriate remedial measures as deemed fit.” The order ignored the fact that if a direct application to the police were an effective solution, these couples would not have invested the time, money and risk to petition the High Court in the first place. By sending them back to the very authorities they sought to bypass, the court effectively denied them the protection they sought.
