I’m thrilled the Christopher Tolkien Centenary Conference is virtual for the accessibility (not just for attendees but also many of the speakers) but I’m sad I’m not going to get to hang out with the speakers in person!
It’s funny that any attempt to relate the show to differing details in the books is seen by some people as an excuse to pile on criticism of the show and by other people as me being overly pedantic.
And Tolkien later retconned that Old Norse was used because it represented the language of the Men of the Dale (or more broadly Men of the North) much like Old English represented the language of the Rohirrim.
I wonder if we'll get introduced to Athelas in a later ROP season. Aragorn says in cite.digitaltolkien.com/LR/1… that Athelas was introduced to Middle-earth by the Men of the West and by the late Third Age it only grew "near places where they dwelt or camped of old".
On Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th November we are hosting the Christopher #Tolkien Centenary Conference, in honour of Christopher's life and works. The event is online, free to attend and open to all. Sign up and check out the speaker list on our website tolkiensociety.org/events/ch…

Had a wonderful conversation today with James from Digital Tolkien! It premiers today at 1:30pm.
We nerd out for almost an hour on how he got into Tolkien, the wonder of words and the tools he is creating for scholars and fans alike!
People often ask me, “Why did you write a story about a talking bear?”
It's a fair question... most language textbooks are rather dry affairs. Ōsweald Bera is something else entirely.
"Well, Colin, explain yourself!"
Ok, so... colingorrie.substack.com/p/h…
I get the honor of having a fun conversation with my friend James from @DigitalTolkien tomorrow! We're going to nerd out on Tolkien, words, History of Middle-earth, ROP and more!
Drop a question you would love to ask below!
Excited to share it with you this weekend!
